Punk doesn't equal alt. rock. Not round here, anyway.

Alternative Rock does owe a lot to punk. I'll give it that. Some people even go as far as to call Nirvana a punk band (which they are not).

As for good Alternative Rock bands, check out Weezer.

You should try all the Fugazi albums.

Silverchair are another great band.

Though most people know them for that one goofy song, not even worth mentioning, Ugly Kid Joe were damn good. Not what you'd expect if you only know that "other" song.

Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Neutral Milk Hotel - Aeroplane Over The Sea (one of my all time favs.)
