can someone recommend me some good alt. rock?

Super Furry Animals, especially the album from which I took my avatar..

a lot of the rest are bad, you could listen to the entire back catalogue of most alt. rock bands in five minutes by listening to the Beatles' A Day in the Life and have a better time.

Paul McCartney occasionally plays on SFA records, so.. there's a recommendation 8)

Liquid Gang - Sunshine

it's from "Radiator".

Love Kraft, the most recent, is pretty average. the first and last two tracks are pretty amazing, though. either Radiator or Phantom Power is a good place to start. or Ice Hockey Hair EP, kekeke

Radiohead - OK Computer: Probably -THE- Alt. Rock album. Inteligent, original and simply mind blowing.

Blur - s/t: Away from their Britpop sound; Blur started to experiment and add more genres into the mix resulting on a killer Alt. Rocjk album.

Third Eye Blind - Blue / Out Of The Vein: Stefan Jenkins presents a pair of albums which take Alt. Rock one step ahead by adding superb musicianship (he studied at Berkley), interesting ideas and some of the best hooks ever. Not to mention great and clever lyrics.

Brand New - Deja Entendu: Many times unfairly thrown into the Emo genre. Deja Entendu is a killer album filled with energy, lots of soft/loud dynamics, a lot of cockiness, and pretentiousness.


AFI - Sing The Sorrow: AFI are no longer Punk in this album and maybe it's for the best. A very dark album (for mainstream terms...), with great song writting and passionate execution.This is one of those albums where every single song has a moment you're waiting for; weather it's a scream, a chorus, a riff, a bridge or an electronic breakdown. Amazing lyrics.

The Arcade Fire - Funeral: Indie rock done the raw and melancholic way. When you hear it it just feels like one of those low budget plays with stars hanging on strings and papier mache backgrounds. Very warm feeling.

Cold - 13 Ways To Bleed Onstage: Not nü-Metal but nü Grunge. Hated by many for thier MTV exposure, image and their horrible single Just Got Wicked. But it's surprising how good the music can get after this single (which is the first track) is over. Hard hitting Grunge influenced, wanna-be dark Rock.

Dredg - Catch Without Arms. Post-Rock tainted Alt. Rock. Mellow and simply put beautiful.

Fall Out Boy - From Under The Cork Tree. No intruductions needed. Hated by 99% of Metalheads, FOB leave their happy punk antics behind introducing a more Punk Rock oriented sound. Catchy and pretentious as fuck.

The Flamin Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Pink Floyd meets electro / trip hop. Great for those golden Autumn afternoons.

HIM - Razorblade Romance: 80's Pop, some Dark-ish synths and that Finnish sound that everyone can recognize. 10 times better than their latest crap.

Incubus - Make Yourself: Mixes a lot of genres including some funk and jazz elements.

Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights: Think a modern version of Joy Division. More atmospheric and dark. Very elegant sounding.

Mew - Frengers: The future of Rock. Powerfull, greta musicianship, dark yet glamourous. Mew are awesome.

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless: Sludgey, murky, hot, thick and sexy. Only a few words to describe this awesome shoegazer album.

A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms / Thirteenth Step: Two of the most amazing albums I have ever heard. Very dark and tortured (for mainstream); clevcerly written and somewhat experimental. Some of the bets music ever.

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia: Alt. Rock goes a bit prog.

Pulp - Different Class: -THE- britpop album.

The Smashing Pumkins - Mellon Collie & The Infinte Sadness: One of the best albums ever. Not much to say except that it is very varied and original sounding for the time.

Sparta - Wiretap Scars. At the Drive In goes simple and radio friendly.

Thrice - Vheissu: Alt. Rock categorized as Post-Hardcore. Some great riffs and some interesting ideas including slave-like singing.

Thursday - War All The Time. Crazy guitars, loads of energy and quite raw sounding.

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: Country, indie rock and laptops. I too thought I would hate this, but after a few spins I was quite engaged. Even if they stole a The Cure riff...

I like those ones though, niiiiicely written. I also like Blur's album title "Modern Life is Rubbish", so true, so touching

I wouldn't call Porcupine Tree Alt. Rock gone Progressive as I would just Progressive Rock.

Their early works yes, but In Absentia is more Alt Rock than prog.

AFI is still punk! :shock: Not in any way like they were on their first few albums, but still punk nonetheless. Goth punk or something.

I thought STS was quite alt R. But yes I should have said that elements of Punk are still there.

well,thanks for the help, especially daniel, although a lot of those albums were already in my collection. SFA are quite good, and i'm dll'ing a few albums that Daniel recommended so

Go with the path of the Porcupine Tree, young one.

I agree with the Interpol mention. Excellent stuff.

You may also want to try some Catherine Wheel if you have not heard them before. I would suggest "Chrome" or "Happy Days" to start with.

Let me know which ones you got and what do you think of 'em.

That band played a festival here back in 2000 I think, they were booed off the stage because they suck. They gave everyone the finger I assume vowed to never come back, haha.

- The Dismemberment Plan "Emmergency & I"
- Fugazi "The Argument"
- The Detachment Kit "They Raging, Quiet Army"
- Pedro the Lion "Control"
