'Once' is an overproduced album and definitely style over substance. the mainstream popularity doesn't seem to do the bang good either. I preferred them more an amusing indie power metal band on Wishmaster and Ocanborn

Once is not over-produced! That word is abused about as much as "sellout!" Describe to me what over-produced actually means!

Wait a minute...how did Iced Earth get brought into this? And Tim Owens can't sing? Are you crazy?? Iced Earth is done? Dude, you're my new least favorite poster!

Actually, the reason I mentioned Iced Earth was because I had just listened to "The Glorius Failure" (aka "The Glorius Burden") right before reading this board, and as usual, Ripper's vocals made me cringe, so I stated as such in my post. I know it was completely random, but whatever.

As for being your least favorite poster, I can live with that. And if you happen to like Ripper, thats fine too. I am not big on crushing anybody based on their opinions. However, if you did happen to say that Ripper is better than Barlow than you are my second least favorite poster on any board I have ever been on (my least favorite being the one that tried to argue that KISS were better musicians than Iced Earth, FYI).

I was kidding, you're my second least favorite poster. I have an undying hatred for ***MIRAJE*** and his one-armed silliness!

I don't know if I'd call it "over-produced" per se. In some ways I think it may actually be underproduced...

It sounds lifeless to me. I'm not sure I'd call it sterile, it just sounds dead. There's no life to it. No passion. Virtually no emotion. Sometimes you know it's there, or rather, you know it's supposed to be there, but you just can't hear it. The sad thing is that I'm really not sure how to describe what I mean any better than that. I would tend to compare it to Symphony X - "The Odyssey" though. That production also sounds pretty dead to me though it wasn't quite as noticeable on the tracks that had heavier use of keys (Accolade II and Awakenings).

...

But anyway, I agree that the vocals of Nightwish changed dramatically in their more recent offerings, and I'm not sure a vocalist change will actually be as big a deal as it may seem (aside from live performances).

That's what I said isn't it? "Century Child" had quite a bit of it. "Once" barely conveys any - to my ears at least.

Key words. I just don't hear it, Once is such a killer CD, I find it to have tons and tons of emotion.

Ripper is better than Barlow.

They're so different you can't even compare them.

Whoever one prefers between these two is a matter of personal taste. However, technically Ripper is better, there's little doubt about that.

I disagree. Matt has extreme range, he just didn't use it much in Iced Earth because the songs didn't need. A mid-range vocalist is best suited for Iced Earth. Just listen to Matt on their cover of "Number Of The Beast" and "Dracula!" Then tell me he can't hit those notes Owens is so well-known for! There are many other Iced Earth songs that I can't think of right now where Matt nails those Halford-esque notes.

Matt is the better vocalist.

Tarja speaks:

"I don't have words to express my feelings at the moment. I am devastated. This thing happened in a way that I didn't have a slight chance to give my opinion about it. I got fired out of a band that represents the last nine years of my life and I am very sad about it. It has been very cruel the way the band handled this in public. This doesn't change the fact that we were doing amazing music together, but I will never forget the fact that they didn't give me the chance to say goodbye for the people as a NIGHTWISH singer.

"I love you and I really hope to see you soon in my concerts. Thank you very much for your kind words and support. I will never forget you."

Finally we hear from her :)
I think it was harsh for Tuomas to kick her out without her saying goodbye and thanking people while she still was the singer.

Eyesore: i agree with you. Once has TONS of emotion and passion, and it sounds far from dead, as one poster noted.

For the record: i like Barlow and Owens the same, both are different singers with different styles. But Barlow has been gone for way over a year now, Ripper is the singer of IE, now get over it! Iced Earth lives and are still awesome as always have been

That's the only way to deal with LSD (lead singer disease).

I don't know if you've read the goodbye letter from the band. Tarja had said to the guys that she doesn't need Nightwish anymore and other shit like that. You don't need to take that kind of bullshit from bandmates.

My respect for Tuomas and the guys has gone up because of this episode.

Burning Times from SWTWC he hits those notes pretty damn good.

As far as who is better to me each have their own style and range to the point where I prefer either one but I tend to lean towards Owens a little bit more because he's more operatic then Barlow and I tend to like operatic vocals a lot but I do like Barlow's voice though for a baritone he is damn good.

As far as this whole Tarja thing. She said to Tuomas that she didn't need Nightwish and now that she has been ousted she changes her tone hmmmmmm like the old saying goes careful what you say because it will come back to haunt you.

I too have more respect towards Tuomas then ever before he did the right thing by dealing with a situation that needed to be dealt with plain and simple.

Oh and for the record Once does have emotion just because it's different then say Oceanborn or Wishmaster doesn't mean there isn't emotion.True,Tarja doesn't sing her operatic voice here but that doesn't mean she doesn't have emotion.Listen to Nemo,Ghost Love Score and Creek Mary's Blood and tell me she doesn't have any emotion.
