I have recently been trying to get into old death and black metal. Just around 2 or 3 monthes ago I would talk about how much I hated these genres, but with bands like Amon Amarth, Death, Children of Bodom, PainmuseuM, and Morbid Angel have introduced me to the goodness of death and black metal. Now I have been reading a lot about Venom, Bathory, and Celtic Frost and I want to know wich of the three is more popular and better. Now for each band I have only heard 1 song for Bathory, 1 song for Celtic Frost, and 2 songs for Venom. I like Venom the best so far, but I would other peoples opinions. :twisted:

I don't mind being asked. BATHORY by far! All first five albums are great. Next up is Celtic Frost with their first three ones. I like Venom too, but I don't find them as great as Bathory and CF.

Definitely Bathory. Venom aren't to be taken too serious.

what would be some key pick ups for each band? in other words what cds should i be looking for?

I haven't heard much by Venom, or Celtic Frost, so I voted Bathory. I love listening to them when I drive to work in the morning when the sun hasn't come out yet.



"Hammerheart" is a brilliant record.

Bathory destroys Frost and Venom.

No fucking way is The Return a highlight for Bathory.

Under the Sign or Blood Fire Death are both infinitely better if you're going for something comparable to the other bands, and Hammerheart is a must-have, the band's masterpiece.

When you want to try your first black metal band, I'd suggest:
Ulver - Bergtatt
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger

I suggest you dig into what predated it later, this will give you a better idea on what BM sounds like than Venom for example.

with black metal, im starting from the beginning and working my way up, plus i already mentioned above how i have heard only a few songs, but Venom kicks royal ass so far.

Its a toss up between Bathory and Celtic Frost, but I think I'll go for Bathor

i vote BATHORY!! my personal favourite is Blood Fire Death.

what do you guys think of Bathory's "Requiem"? it's thrash and with a raw (not BM raw, just, you know, raw) sound and stuff. i like it, even if some songs are a bit similar-sounding.

Celtic Frost is nice, of course.

to be honest i don't like Venom.. lots of respect and all, but no, defint«itely not my cup of tea.
