That's actually a valid question when you consider all the crap he put out after Star People.

If you liked Images and Words, I'd get Awake next. Than try out some of DT's harder stuff with Train Of Thought, followed by their best progressive work with Metropolis Part 2. Than try Live At Budoken, followed by any others of your choice til you have them all.

PS check out ytsejamrecords.com for official DT soundboard boots. DT plays some wicked stuff, including covers of whole albums from Iron Maiden and Metallica.

I just purchased Awake for $7.99 CAD in the bargain bin.. what a deal! Surely these guys have inspired the current generation of prog metallers.

I kept having dejavu throughout the first listen.. and then I finally placed it - Ring of Fire / Dreamtower.

Without being a Miles Davis fan,i think this is not a very flatterring compliment for him.

My advice:Buy all their CD's;then burrrrrn them all!!!!!!!(while playing some old Saxon loud!)

I have Train of Thought, which is pretty Goddamn good (despite a vocalist that sounds a little too pompous at times). Otherwise, I haven't really listened to enough Dream Theater (yet) to give an accurate assessment of them. I have, however, listened to them enough to question whether or not they can really be classified as "metal." I've always thought of them as being more "heavy rock" than "metal" (ie. they're missing the aggression and anger that comes with most metal music).

And yes, I know this is an old topic.
