Ya, Unleashed in the East definitely. Some songs on Live After Death sound better than their album versions, but some don't. Whereas, everything on Unleashed in the East sounds better. Live After Death has a better track selection, though.

Yeah, if you don't like the title track off Painkiller, you can pretty much close the book on Priest....and you'd be gay.

Yeah, even I like Painkiller. It took them long enough, but they finally got a great drummer, and kicked up their intensity a few notches.

They had a great drummer on Stained Class and Killing Machine.

Then they brought in the sex fiend. Who was guff at everything except molesting retards.

Well he wasn't bad by any means, but he still seemed to lack power. Maybe it's less his fault and more the production. That's one of my main problems with the bands 70's albums, they don't pack much of a punch, the drums are quiet and the guitars are distorted but not enough, trebly and hollow, sounding very shallow, and lacking the full metallic crunch that would have made them really effective. If you look at a band like the Scorpions, or even Sabbath again, they had more ideally metallic guitars, and overall more effective production/mixes, and their guitar sound was closer to what would surface in later bands. Even as early on the song Black Sabbath itself, there was a much more dense and powerful guitar sound than most bands had for the duration of the decade.

Oh, without a doubt. There's no question that Priest had shitty production in the 70s. However, I do maintain that the riffs are just as heavy and in most cases, even heavier, than Sabbath's and Zeppelin's.

Just out of curiosity, what riffs in particular, if you could name a few. Aside from maybe Dissident Agressor, the Ripper, a couple others, a lot of their riffs don't really hit me as particularly heavy and/or memorable.

So what if he is.I don't judge a person by his or hers sexual orientation I could care less if he is gay,bi or a damn shemale so as long as he can chug out some damn good metal music.

What if he was black would you still judge him because of the color of his skin. The point is that someone shouldn't be judge because of skin, sexual preference, religious or political point of view.Base your opinion on their music not their private life.

Joke :)
I just thought it's old enough so everyone gets it without the use of smileys.

I had a feeling it was but I really wanted to make that point anyway because I see some many people say that JP sucks because Halford is gay or they don't listen to JP because he's gay and that really irritates me because you should never judge someone's art because of sexual preference.

Well, for example, take the main galloping riff of Stained Class. When you up the production on that (as Halford did on Live Insurrection) you get pure thrashiness. Take the song Tyrant, which is completely vicious once they up the production on Unleashed in the East. Or Savage, or Deciever, or Island of Domination, or Saints in Hell, and the list goes on...

I assume we're talking about Les Binks and not Dave Holland here? If so I agree completely. He would be more recognised if the production had made his beats sound as heavy as they actually were.

Priest has always been, and will always be my favorite band (we are talking over 20 years now).

They have also always been something of a cult, probably due to their uncompromising (even a little distant) image and the level of experimentation in their music. With Maiden you know what you are getting, and so it's more acceptible to put Maiden on in mixed company than Priest.

As I said, Maiden is more formulaic than Priest, whose back catalogue that is far more varied than Maiden's. I like the fact that every Priest CD has its own personality. Early Maiden is more primitive (production and songwriting), as well - something I didn't appreciate in my younger days.

I will concede that Maiden does seem to be able to connect with their audience on a deeper level than Priest does, and they win in the mascot dept.. many times I have asked myself if a lot of people got into Maiden just for the album covers and t-shirts.

Like most people here, I have a ton of respect for both bands, but I'm going to go with Priest on this one. I find their darker sound more appealing. Plus, Tipton's psychotic solos seal the deal for me.

I will also add that I find that I get more of a adrenaline rush from the speedier Judas Priest songs such as Bullet Train (terribly underrated), Hellrider, and of course Painkiller to name a few.
