As a result of Jason's recent Opeth review for Morningrise there has been a bit of discussion about the best Opeth album; we all have a favorite one so....

Poll time!

I had to go with Blackwater Park; I mean this one is simply amazing, a perfect blend of agressive Death Metal, beautiful acoustic guitars, deep growls, excellent clean vocals and enough progression to leave you in awe; not to mention the incredible musicianship to back all of this up.

Ã…kerfeldt sure showed the genious he is in this one.

One of my all time favorite albums.

Blackwater Park is just simply an incredible piece of art unmatched in it's field, to the point of it becomming totally unreal. It's just that damn impressive. It really captures me in it's cleched fist of a musical universe, and I am gone to other dimensions right untill the end.

Just thinking about the album right now makes me want to put on.
I think I will!

I wanna get my hands on My Arms, Your Hearse before I judge, because I've heard it's incredible. As of now though, I can't picture it being better than Blackwater Park... not much is.

Excellent band and recordings, but I still cant get into the proggy side of things. Only listen to the albums in small amounts. I think it is just me thoug, because I am a big power metal fan, but dont really dig Pagans Mind or Dream theater either???? Who knows maybe i am not a big fan of too many time changes.. etc.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Still excellent stuff and no disrespect coming from here!

It isn't.. but you can see the beginnings of that big crunchy Blackwater sound. Appears a bit muddled at first.. but give it a few listens.

I have to go with Still Life. While it's hard, damn hard, to pick a favorite Opeth disc, Still Life still sounds the best to me. Mikael perfected the new sound he created on MAYH and brought the recording and lyrics to a new level. It also was Martin Lopez's first album with the band his contribution cannot be ruled out. With tracks like "The Moor" "Serenity Painted Death" and "White Cluster" It's the best by far.

Oh, and I think it's funny that an Opeth poll could only be something along these lines. You would never see a "Is Opeth good?" poll. Anyone who voted no would be shunned by the metal community. Opeth is one of those VERY select few bands that are just so damn amazing that everyone from the educated metal community (whether they're into power, black, death, etc) loves them. I don't think I've ever heard someone (that was into metal) say that they don't like Opeth.

I only own Morningrise, Blackwater Park and Damnation. So because I haven't listened to all their other efforts, I cannot really vote. Out of those three, I like "Damnation" the most. But then again, right now, I'm drinking wine, haha

I'm not a prog fan, Dream Theater&co bore me to death but I love Morningrise. For me it's one of the best albums I've ever heard, a masterpiece. As for the following albums... I was very dissapointed by them. Boring, flat, monotonous, no excitement. I couldn't find the same magic, passion and creativity as in Morningrise.

Here's one... I think Opeth is totally boring. Now I do like some bands that throw in even more acoustic parts, such as agalloch, and I'm educated as well 8)
