It depends on how much CoF has tailored their music to be "commercially viable." If they did replace Deva for the express purpose of selling records, they sold out. But doing interviews or other promotional activities doesn't mean a band's sold out, it just means they're trying to make a living.

(Though since I'm apparently the only person in the entire world who likes "Damnation and a Day," what do I know?)

DAAD is the only CoF record I own, it's quite good, but there are other bands I want to check out before them.

Re: "Danny is a fag" , no he's not, you are.

I would say they sold out, but the new stuff has glimpse's of old glory. Liek some one here stated, somethign in the production melowed out the guitar.

Example being: hearing nemesis live was fucking insane. It fits perfectly between Lord Abortion and Ebony pressed for sunset. ( i think thats where it was in there set). But then on the album it was weak...really weak. As all the album is, especialy English shores.

i agree, i wouldnt consider them sellouts, its hard for black metal to go mainstream, no matter how amazing the band is, if a band is mainstream i consider them sellouts. But im talking like MTV, Fused commericals, and stuff like that. It takes alot for a band to sellout though. but then again money will make anyone do anything

One man's idea of evolution is another's worst nightmare, a nightmare filled with all the bands he knows selling out, hard.

I really don't know if I would cry sellout at COF, I don't really care about that unless it directly affects the music in a bad way (i.e. when a melodeath band churns out a sickeningly nu-metal riff) or if they radically change their image to suit a current trend (Life of Agony anyone? not that I much enjoyed them anyway), and since I don't listen to much COF I can't say if they have gotten much better or worse, but I haven't seen any pictures or videos of the band decked out in fashioncore attire or anything. The only thing they have done that I know of is sign to a big label, and that's just business. It's insane to flip out because a band is trying to make a living off of their music or attempting to move up in the ranks. Like Carnifex basically said, it depends on how much they have changed for the sole purpose of becoming commercially viable, not how much they may been attempting to introduce themselves to a wider audience.

I don't consider CoF sellouts. They always seemed to embrace commericalization.

Agreed. I don't really see how people are calling them sellouts. You can certainly dislike the direction their music has taken the last few albums, and you can say they aren't "Black Metal" anymore (something the band regularly says in interviews anyway: "We're more horror metal than Black Metal"), but sellouts? Their sound, while it has changed from album to album, is still pretty aggressive, the lyrics are still dark and vampyric, and their image is still S&M gothic... just like when they started. It's not like Dani abandoned his shriek for a totally clean sound, or they threw in some hardcore breakdowns in the middle of their songs to appeal to nu-metal kids. I think they're one of the few bands that have signed to a major label WITHOUT selling out.

No. Nymphtamine was a lot more commercial than DDAD was, just listen to their 'Devil Woman' cover, plus the suprisingly good title track.

Well that is pretty lame. Bam lives about 5 miles from my house. The town is always trying to force him to move because he is a jackass.

By reading this thread you'd actually get the impression that CoF might be a sellout mainstream band...

Are you bat-shit insane? I dont like thier music very much. I have I prefer a less polished sounding black metal... but CoF is far from mainstream. I think you guys need to step back and grab some perspective.

The first single was called: Gilded Cunt. 'nuff said.
