I didn't really get that impression from Stridig, but it was still good so whatever.

MDB's first album in 4.5 years, by far their longest break. Aaron's family struggles, Calvin rejoining and leaving again, and conflicting reports about what this material will sound like all means this recording should be a very interesting listen. Their new second guitarist is a guy I had never heard of before, in some independent death metal group.

Also somewhat interesting is that Hamish Glencross and Shaun Steels, two guys important to their post 34.78% complete renaissance on works like The Dreadful Hours, Barghest O Whitby, and Map of All Our Failures, are releasing their own album on Profound Lore in early 2020.

Speaking of which:

My Dying Bride's Facebook wrote:
Like a phoenix from the ashes, a legend rises again in 2020. MY DYING BRIDE went through some tough times last year and fought many struggles along the way, but now the British doom metal band are proud to announce their new studio album The Ghost Of Orion for 6th March 2020.

The new MY DYING BRIDE record is the product of a vibrantly creative band that is more than willing to build on their past successes. The band commented:

"A new album for a new era of MY DYING BRIDE with fresh faces and a more accessible style compared to some of their past, highly technical releases. 'The Ghost of Orion' features compositions not only of epic proportions but of intimate quality too, from death metal vocals to the pained cries of a vocalist in longing, the L.P. will raise and fall like the beautiful landscape of Yorkshire in which it was recorded. With layer upon layer of guitars both heavy and harmonic, Andrew Craighan has created a rich soundscape that is beautifully epic, enhanced with violins and keys from Shaun MacGowan along with the ominous murmur of cello from acclaimed cellist Jo Quail. And speaking of guest artists, the wondrous voice of Lindy-Fay Hella (WARDRUNA) adds an ethereal beauty to the album. Adding his particular style of drumming this time round is Jeff Singer whose percussion exploits have elevated the bands’ rhythm section to another level aided by the effortlessly stylish Lena Abe on bass guitar. Aaron Stainthorpe delivers a compelling and often disturbing performance with his own particular style of vocals offering sincere eulogies along with the visceral carnage of a soul in pain, with poetic lyrics of a quality not often seen in this genre. This collection of songs is the bands most brilliant yet, honing 30 years of experience into the well crafted offering that is 'The Ghost of Orion'."

Pre-order The Ghost Of Orion here: https://nblast.de/TheGhostOfOrion

Today, The Ghost Of Orion will be targeting our souls in form of the first single 'Your Broken Shore' - a haunting, gloomy piece driven by melancholy and deep, dark emotion.
A music video for this stunning masterpiece will be released on 10th January.
Check out the single here: https://nblast.de/MDB-YourBrokenShore

The album will be available as CD, black 2LP Gatefold, white 2LP Gatefold, red 2LP Gatefold and picture disc 2LP Gatefold.

The Berzerker have reformed and are apparently putting something out this year.

Paysage d'Hiver has released its first ever full-length... on USB stick and only to attendees of an invitation-only Facebook event. Talk about trolling...

Hopefully most of those will be better than the new MDB. The first track was ok, but this second released song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKTNLE3kwK0 is just flat and lifeless.

Hm, I didn't think it was so terrible after one listen, but I'll try it again. Don't despair at one bad track though!

So Katatonia has two songs out now. I haven't been a fan for years and I wasn't impressed by the first single but this second track is really fun! 80s soloing fused with fairly standard Katatonia is a combination I never expected. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQaN2elJ-dQ

New Oranssi Pazuzu ended up being very good, but they kind committed to being more spooky space metal than black metal.

New Benighted album is pretty solid. Not as good as Asylum Cave, but not bad like Carnivore Sublime.

Ruins of Beverast also had a split. Their track is solid; other band isn't really my thing.

New Ulcerate is very Ulcerate like, so dissonant and great.

I'm told to check out Khora and WVRM.

Quickfire:
Very looking forward to hearing the Oranssi Pazazu after loving their previous album...

One listen into the Benighted, their best in a few years. Do like their leaning back towards deathgrind a little more.

Reviewed the RoB split already, up for Monday; agree, although I did like the Mourning Beloveth contribution.

Ulcerate don't really surprise any more but want to hear it regardless.

Not heard of those two, will have to add them to my list!

Agonia Records today confirms the signing of the new, Texas-based “mythological occult metal” act Proscriptor McGovern’s Apsû. The debut/self-titled album’s release date is to be announced in the latter portion of 2020.
