Well now I feel like I should have checked my privilege, heh. I'm hardly rich but am comfortable enough these days to fund things like cinema trips without a second thought... Hope your money worries are over soon, I've been there and it sucks.

Are you up to date on True Detective season 2 btw? The shoot-out partway through is seriously the best I've seen in years and quite possibly since Heat, which is indeed a classic that I need to see again soon.

Thanks, hopefully the money troubles will end soon. I have not been following True Detective this year, didn't like the changes they made and casting decisions for the most part, but I will certainly watch that scene you mentioned.

On the theater experience debate: I agree with thrashtildeath that war movies or big action scenes lend themselves naturally to a big screen viewing over others (Gladiator and Public Enemies are two theater viewings that come to mind which really needed the big screen), but I also agree with noodles that anything with excellent cinematography will be enchanced on the big screen. Red from the Three Colors Trilogy comes to mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7HUFo9lEGw&spfreload=10, that movie had hardly any action, but since the way the movie plays with the color red is so ingrained within the cinematography and the even the storyline I figure it would have been even better bigger.

Really wish I saw Heat on the big screen but I was too young at the time. But I did find that scene we've been discussing for anyone who never saw it but wondered what the fuss was about. 10:30 minutes, worth your time if you like action scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL9fnVtz_lc&spfreload=10

Finally saw Mad Max Fury Road. My first reaction was like this is seriously what folks were up in arms about? Charlize Theron and some old ladies with guns? Needless to say, the movie was badass. Tom Hardy was great. Worthy of being in line to the original Mad Max and Road Warrior films. It was a little thrown together, but it is the third film in a series so can't expect that much exposition. People complaining that it was a two hour long car chase obviously just never saw Road Warrior. And I love how over the top all of it was. I forget the director's name, but he definitely had a vision.

Most definitely a visionary, and an extraordinary one at that. I was tempted to buy it on blu-ray the other day but withheld myself. Will eventually do so.

Ex Machina - Pretty intense robo-drama. Oscar Isaac is doing great work at the moment, can't remember a bad film I've seen him in. Brendan Gleeson's kid isn't bad, either.

Really enjoyed it. Kinda wish they had played up the horror elements more, but it was solid nonetheless.

want to see Ex-Machina! and Legend with Tom Hardy!

saw Armageddon again the other day. in retrospect, it's fascinatingly bad, pure 90's Michael Bay, 'MURICA glory. the kind of ideas that got made into movies those days - Independence Days, Face/Off (glorious!), The Core.... those were the days.

I miss 90s blockbusters. Less CGI, generally more awkward attempts at humor. Great movies to laugh at.

This never gets old. Endlessly quotable and terribly fun. Vinnie Jones for best performance by a professional athlete.

Very few films illustrate the poetry of the swear word better than Glengarry and even fewer feature an ensemble cast of it's caliber. A biting commentary/parody of the cutthroat world of real estate sales, the film features some of the most cutting and venomous monologues ever put to screen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H68eCEWKb7M

and will forever remind us that 'coffee is for closers.'

A must see, gents.

It is a fun watch. Pacino and Baldwin really bring it. Arkin's extended scene almost kills it for me though.

Says a lot about a movie when Alan Arkin is your weakest player. To be fair, his character was by far the least interesting and really didn't give him much to chew on unlike the other guys. Aside from Baldwin's legendary monologue, Pacino has all the best lines and, like you said, really steals the spotlight when he's on screen.

In other news:

Goodfellas turned 25 this year and the main cast reunited at the Tribeca Film Festival to mark the occasion. Unfortunately, Joe Pesci was not there due to a prior obligation. [Insert obligatory shinebox quip here.]

A clip from the Today show on the reunion:

Watched Reanimator and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon the other night. Starting my streak of horror film viewing.

Thanks for the heads up on Goodfellas. And yes, I wasn't really knocking Arkin so much as the relative weakness of his character and that extended scene of him in the car with Ed Harris' character.

Everyone knows the words of Glengarry are Mamets, but Director James Foley has also been the most frequent director on 'House of Cards', including what I thought was a really excellent job he did with last year's finale.

Snatch is awesome, but i would say the best performance by an athlete was by Shaq in KAZAAM

never saw Glengarry Glen Ross, but i have seen Baldwin's monologue. awesome stuff.

saw The Martian, it's a very fun movie, but the book has so much more detail. i understand that putting all the cool shit he pulls off into the movie would make it far too long, of course. worth watching, but not worth one of those overpriced british movie tickets.

btw, tickets in Portugal can cost as little as €3 per person. full-price goes to i think €7 so even then it's cheaper than anywhere i've ever been.

A lovely story about family and loss steeped in Irish folklore and featuring some of the most stunning 2-D animation ever put to film. Cartoon Saloon is producing some truly fantastic work that is a pleasant alternative to the Disney machine. Looking forward to their next production.

But this, you can trust.

Classic.

Damn good breakdown of Mad Max: Fury Road.

Smart move. A bigger, better Blu-Ray release filled with tons of extras and an alternative B&W version of the film are expected to be released sometime in the near future.
