Why exactly is this held up as a paragon of the doom/death genre? I listened to this years ago and forgot about it quickly, and the same feeling of well-crafted boredom is washing over me again. Sure it is a well-done recording, but Dance of December Souls or The Dreadful Hours it is not. The female vocalist is very good but "Tears Laid in Earth" by The Third and the Mortal is a much more memorable in only a slightly more uptempo style.

I'll have to give that a listen, not very familiar with Draconian but listening to this atm:

Could call them more of a Gothic metal band than a doomdeath one...

Yeah I think they went more in that direction on their later albums. I just noticed the glowing reviews for the Arcane Rain Fell recording on metal-archives and I am just not seeing it.

It's epic, melodious, contrast-typicality between growls and female vocals... All ingredients for a strong Gothic album. It's not trying to be Esoteric, Mournful Congregation, or Monolithe

Fair enough, but the reviewers were comparing it to the Peaceville 3 and Katatonia's two doom/death albums, not those bands you listed. It is very competently done stuff, and I'll just chalk it up to false advertising.

Ummm... Those it isn't, for self-explanatory reasons! Some people worship music instead of appreciating it for what it is which blinds the power of judgment thus being left deceived by their own faculties.

Oh, shit. I didn't realize either of those guest spots. But yeah, not quite as great as Monolith. Not a 95/100, just a 90/100.

Edit: Once I looked it up, I totally recognize it. That A&P intro is great, really been enjoying that, and Phil is the spoken vocals presumably in Profits. Apparently, also the Bethelehem dude does the other spoken vox.
