I've spent all of 3 days in Scotland, and each minute there I wanted to get out of it.

About the movie, I missed your review at first, but I heard elsewhere it was worth watching as well, and that ScarJo was in the role best suited to her: her looking pretty with very understated acting. I'll try to see it soon.

Ha, not been up there in years, but yeah... And I hope you like it; the only other people I know that like it are film critics!

Anyone seen Godzilla yet? I'm in the mood for a solo cinema trip but gf wants to see that so might fit that new Arnie thing in one night...

Godzilla was oddly paced. As a guy who loved Pacific Rim, Godzilla was good but not amazing. The first half wants so badly to get to the monsters and be done with the silly setup. Once it gets to the monsters, the humans just need to go away. It had some awesome moments, and seeing it in the theaters definitely seems worth it given what the film is going for. You won't regret it even if you don't love it.

Just watched Mistaken for Strangers. It was more about Tom and Matt and making the documentary than it was about the band but it got me crying by the end [Tom describing Matt's nightmare]. Also Slough Feg, Halford christmas, and Celeste :dio:

Monster effects aside, thought Godzilla dreadful. *spoiler warning*

Shouty Walter White anchors it at first, but killing him off and letting the film be lead by dreadful actors and charisma-vacuums like the kid from Kick-Ass and his Olsen twin wife was a huge mistake. Didn't care at all about them, Ken Watanabe's near-racist-caricature scientist never looked less than constipated, and the film didn't deliver on monster action until the end. The whole 'godzilla is the guardian of the planet!' thing was always laughable, as was the clockwork nuke that they had to turn off ten minutes later or it would devastate San Francisco, only for it to go off five minutes away from it anyway. Just awful writing.

Pacific Rim was far better, had a sense of humour and Stringer Bell shouting about the end of the world, and made you take giant robots punching monsters in the face seriously. On a brighter note, the trailer for 22 Jump Street looks brilliant and I will laugh like a drain at Jonah Hill pretending to be a Mexican gangster etc without shame.

How early did they kill off WW? Awful, that was the only reason I was considering watching it.

And why is an Olsen girl getting roles of this magnitude when the whole cast of Buffy is basically out of work? I'll never understand Hollywood.

Really early. Felt like only half an hour or so in, although it was probably more. Certainly before the reveal of the main monster.

God knows...

Totally agree with you on Godzilla. The high praise that this movie has been getting from some critics is baffling to me.

X-Men Days of Future Past thoughts? I loved it. There were moments where the movie seemed to embrace the nature of the comics and go all out, particularly in showing just why Storm and Magneto are the strongest mutants, that I thought were just absolutely amazing scenes and they had me all giddy in my seat. It wasn't perfect: the use of Kitty Pryde's power and Prof. X's lack thereof seemed unnecessary.

Yeah it was great. Not the world's biggest comic nerd but I loved the bit parts like Bishop. This and the 60s one were great and much better than the original 3 X Men films I think, particularly the third. Young and old Magnetos are BAMFs. The set-up at the end was absolutely fabulous too, bring on the next film... en sabah nur!

Saw 22 Jump Street this afternoon. Hilarious and better than the first, I thought. Particularly liked the in-jokes and Ice Cube's expanded role. The 'Cate Blanchette' line was great...

the "new" x-men looks awesome. haven't seen it yet. same for 22 jump street.

saw the second 300 movie, awesome, better than the first, although having the spartan queen also be a swordfighting badass was a bit much. just a minor gripe, of course. the whole movie is a bit much

also saw zack and miri make a porno. it was very in parts but weighed down by the unnecessary romantic storyline. we don't need that shit, ffs.

honestly i haven't seriously LOLed at a new comedy since i think the first hangover movie. if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Watched Hard Boiled the other night for the first time in ages. Holy Meshuggah, I forgot what a ridiculous kill count this movie has! It's worth watching for the brilliantly executed hospital segment alone. The 2+ minute, uncut tracking shot of Leung and Yun-Fat mowing through Triad thugs is one of John Woo's finest moments.

Hmm, he is an all-time favorite actor, but I never saw this one. Probably because of its reputation as a pure action movie, which is no doubt very well done, as you noted.

Give Hardboiled a chance, man. Think of it like Hong Kong Dirty Harry with a whole lot more gun battles and explosions. I followed it up with the equally bombastic The Raid: Redemption. Cool to see Silat finally getting some real exposure in the West. The scenes with Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog) are some of the best martial arts sequences I've ever seen. Glad they brought him back for Part 2.

Alan Partridge - Alpha Papa - Weirdly disappointing and not as funny as the reviews made it sound. 3*

Rise of the Planet of The Apes - (not the new one, the one with James Franco) pretty great. The "damn dirty ape!" line was terrific.

L'auberge espagnole - I guess "people who can relate to a year abroad doing grad school in a foreign language cultural hodgepodge" is a bit of niche market but s'good. Audrey Tatou is good at yelling.

Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home - free willy 2. p.s. why are nowadays British tv shows imitating this style of shoddy camerawork/acting?

Oz the Great and Powerful - shitty. Some of the retro feel was cool (some of it was soap opera-y) but they should've retroed the special effects too. The music was nice.

It's pretty great. Getting that damn song out your head is a challenge though.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - surprisingly good. You'll believe monkeys can really talk, and ride horses and shoot machine guns etc...

That was a fun movie, I watched it with my son a few weeks ago. Batman and Bad Cop were hilarious.

The Lego Movie was cool but not that cool, i thought..

saw Pain & Gain. a bit too long, but quite a few funny moments. good job of making a comedy out of such a sordid affair.
