well, I think those three bands are way better than 99% of Power Metal bands and certainly better than "4th rate Iced Earth"

You cant be serious, man. Why are you even here? I knew from your posts around here that you came into metal rather differently than the rest of us, and that silly comment you made just proves it. In this forum, you will never win an argument that says trivial commercial rock bands like the ones mentioned above are better than any metal bands around the world, especially Iced Earth

Pearl Jam and the other crappy bands mentioned are hardly metal now are they. Then there's that "christian" metal band you mentioned a while back. You made more of a progressive metal side rather than anything else....
Just some of the bands you've mentioned tells me your musical background is a tad different, thats all.

My question is simply why would someone take the time to scan the power metal threads if he doesn't like 99% of them.

Look, i cant remember the name of the christian band, but my point is, TIE has a different musical/metal background than the majority of the rest of us. Nothing wrong with that.
I just think its weird for someone who prefers Nirvana :x over any power metal bands to be hanging around the Heavy, Prog, Power & True Metal Warriors forums, especially if he hates power metal....
I'm not having a go at ya, just curious....

Me too.

He can listen to whatever he wants, but I don't want to think that someone comes around here just to say negative things about the overall genre.

for that damn 1% man... I can't miss good power metal because I like it... saying 99% is mediocre works with any genre imo...

ok, as a reminder :
I got into metal in 1978 listening to bands such as AC/DC, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Deep Puple, Trust (excellent French band) etc...
then I got into the NWOBH around 1981 discovering great bands such as Diamond Head, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Tygers of Pan Tang, Samson etc...
around 1983/84 I discovered the beginings of what will later be called thrash & speed metal (european name for power metal back then) with bands such as Running Wild, Helloween, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Megadeth etc...
from that time to 88/89 I was a huge metal fan though I kept listening to other musics too... but it was mostly metal and particulary thrash metal I liked then...
I got sick of that as thrash slowly died... american hair metal had its good bands but, overall, I found that scene to be too much of an excuse to be on MTV
so Grunge was a sweet relief as metal turned either very commercial or death/grind that I didn't enjoy much... around the same time I began listening to far more diverse genres leading me into Jazz, indie, hardcore, techno, pop, experimental etc...

still, metal has a very special place in my heart for it's the music of my childhood and I kept following the scene since I first got into it...

so, okay, my background is indeed different but just because I'm much older than everyone else here is...

Did you miss the Alternative and Rock forums?? Discuss music. Don't get pissed about peoples' personal tastes!

You're not much older than me if you are at all.

I went through a phase where I listened to some grunge as well (living in Seattle from 1989-1995 nmade it hard not to), but I would never call it better than 99% of power metal bands. That's my own opinion. Better than some hair bands? I'd give it that.

All genres consist of a number of quality bands followed by even more mediocre ones, but I have to say as a guitar player that the amount of skill and practice required just to play music that is labeled as "power metal" is pretty staggering. That doesn't mean the music is always good or original. Jon Schaffer of IE said it best when he said the best musician cannot always write a decent song.

I only bring it up because I was not a very good or experienced player back when grunge was in, but I could learn to play any song I pretty much wanted to within a short amount of time. Now, I've been playing for 15 years, and some power metal songs still kick my a$$.

There are just too many things to look at when judging music, and making a claim like "better than 99%" seems over-the-top. If you lke it more than 99% of the power metal bands, that's your opinion, but I just have trouble with "factual" claims based on opinion.

Eyesore, did you see what i wrote...i wrote the Heavy, prog, power....blah blah forums. I do know about the alternative/rock/nu metal forums. I'm saying TIE would have an equal interest in those forums, not just here....saying he didnt like 99% of power metal suggests that he would frequent other forums in here.

I'm not pissed about other people's tastes....everyone here has lots of different tastes, i just noticed it more with TIE, and i also said "Nothing wrong with that". Dont misinterpret what i wrote, eyesore.

Hey, i like other types of music other than metal too, you know, but metal is my absolute favourite and no other music type will become that.

OK, fair enough. I just think we shouldn't worry about a conversation straying from it's original topic. Yeah, and Iced Earth thread went into a weird Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Radiohead conversation. It was a natural shift in topic, not a big deal to me. I'd rather just discuss music rather than worrying about what forum I'm in, you know? Like, "Oh, I can't talk about Ani Difranco at all because I'm in the Power Metal forum."

If someone started a Nirvana thread here, I can understand someone saying something.

After hearing SW the first time back in the day, i knew there had to be more coming. when horror show was released, i thought they had decided not to go with it. Now Jon looks like he is going to after all. i just wish it was barlow instead of ripper. No offense to ripper, of course, but i guess i'm just used to the sound of barlows vocals when i listen to IE.

IT'S OFFICIAL!!!

Excerpts from THIS INTERVIEW:

Man, I'm pumped! I'm very excited about what's comin' up and it's gonna be awhile because we're finally gonna do the 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' story on the most awesome concept record that we've ever done. So I'm gonna start writing that very soon and Tim's [Owens, vocals] excited about it and we're just gonna come back with a vengeance, man."

It's gonna be two albums: it's gonna be a Part I and then Part II will probably be released six months later. Part I will come out as we're finishing up Part II and then we'll probably kick off the world tour with the release of Part II. So it's gonna probably be three and a half hours of music and I mean, I'm tellin' a story that is sci-fi kind of horror, conspiracy theory, but it's based over twelve thousand years of human history; there's a lot to tackle in this thing. The trilogy was just a teaser to the whole story and what we're gonna be gettin' in to is so much bigger. And that's actually the big news, I know there have been a lot of people that have been wantin' that to happen for a long time."

It has to be our 'Operation Mindcrime' or our 'The Wall'.

Hopefully it won't be too overlong for its own good... I'm hoping three and a half hours of music was an exaggeration. I really can't wait for this though.

That's a matter of opinion, and as a fellow history buff, I admire it, especially considering it was done with basically a nil budget.

Yeah i too didn't like the Guettysburg DVD, i think John just want it to get out of the way just because of a commitment made to the label. Im sure he's gonna put all his efforts into the STWC pt II, the pressure is certaintly going to be high, but they can deliver, no doubt
