The last album I heard from them had some emo style clean vocals that totally turned me off. I really liked Calculating Infinity, and Irony is a Dead Scene (mainly cause I'm a Patton freak), but nothing else really got me. I know they have the potential to be great so I always check out their albums hoping for all heavy vocals again.

Actually, the clean vocals balanced with the punishing insanity is what makes Option Paralysis & Ire Works so great. Doing harsh vox over & over is what made them one-dimensional in the first place.

And of course Greg Puciato is in a good place. He's been banging this for the last 1-2 years:

So Ms. Haze has starred in 542 adult films, and directed 14. She also almost exclusively performed only with women, out of loyalty to her then boyfriend, a cameraman. The wonders of wikipedia!

But that album, it's damn good. I think it blends the pop and heavy elements seamlessly. Black Bubblegum and Widower off past albums stood out as clean vox/melodic/poppy or whatever moniker people use to write those tracks off. The beauty of this album in a way that makes it stand with their past efforts is how perfectly they've blended these elements. The title track is a heavy song with melodic vocals even if it has a crooning pace for the most part. Nothing's Funny and Paranoid Shields, my favorite track, both operate at a catchy level despite being as heavy as most other bands around, performing the dual task of poppy and metal simultaneously, without relying simply on a clean chorus a la metalcore as was exhibited in past tracks like Milk Lizard. The songwriting is just immaculate given how they've pulled themselves out of the metalcore rut to be something all their own.

Totally agree with the beginning of Lost My Bet sounding like a jazzy drumbeat. Weinman and Puciato get the media attention, but without Rymer, Wilson and their new rhythm guitarist, who after seeing them live last night looks a little too nerdy and boring to be in this band compared to Tuttle, this band's sound would fall apart. Weinman can only chaotically widdle spasmodically on the guitar because the composition of their sound has been so perfected.
