i agree, a7x isnt metalcore, in fact im suprised there are no reviews for in here on MR, not a bad band at all, very simple stuff but still reasonably heavy, and catchy as hell

I could write a review for City of Evil, it's good stuff. Not album of the year quality, in my opinion, but good stuff.

Blind Guardian my arse. And even if they aren't Metalcore (which everything I've heard from them would indicate they are) it doesn't change the fact that the Metalcore kiddies wear their hoodies like some sort of religious garb. Which was really my point in the first place.

but then what matters is the music... and the music on City Of Evil isn't Metalcore but Metal...

would you say Burzum or Manowar were Metalcore is Mall-Core Kiddies wore hoodies from them ? :? let's be serious for a while... MR Forums isn't a FASHION forum but a MUSIC one... so stick with the music man ! and listen to this new A7X with an open mind, you'll realise it's not as bad as you thought it was and that it's genuine heavy/power metal :P

Im with TIE on this one, it isnt about the image, its about the music, just cos some dickheads listen to A7X doesnt mean their music sucks, I liked sounding of the seventh trumpet, loved waking the fallen and haven't heard city of evil yet. Admittedly they aren't as skilled as Opeth or Dark Tranquility or Arch Enemy but you dont have to have the amott brothers or Laiho on guitars to have a good band. And Dead Machine, please do write a review for City of Evil, and if you want, I cant write a review for waking of the fallen and if it meets the high standards of MR you can post it :) (im a double major english student and have already been accepted into a jounalism degree at college)

Funny, I couldn't possibly know that from the way you write in your posts.

Eh, I dunno the MR team's policy on that sort of thing.

True, this should all be about the music. Howeve i do find A7X as a band, slightly too annoying to want to give their music a chance. You read interviews with them and its all:

"drugs blah blah blah groupies blah blah sex blah blah blah beer.... party... wahey!... blah blah".

For an unsociable recluse like myself this is all very grating.

whatever.... they've provided me with the best heavy metal of 2005, it' all that counts.... honestly I can feel those guys have been influenced by Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian or Angra but their emo/metalcore background sure brings something fresh (fresher than most metal acts) to their sound... sure the single is the weakest, most commercial song of the album but isn't that the case every time a metal act gets a major deal ? :?

anyway, not trying a band's music based on its interviews is just plain stupid so I know, sooner or later, you'll try them just to realise how wrong you were... :D

Name the 'weak commercial song' off of Ashes of the Wake.

I like The Beast and the Harlot. What's everyone's problem with it? Catchy chorus? Assloads of power metal bands have catchy choruses. Clean singing? Assloads of power metal bands have clean singing.

I don't see anything wrong with that song.

ok.... you got me there !

but LoG is not a good example, they're more thrash than heavy metal... and they don't use any clean vocals thus it's not easy to get a single out of any of their productions....

yet, my point is still accurate if you just consider bands using clean vocals.. :P

btw, at first I hated Beast & the Harlot for its mtv-pseudopunk chorus... I slowly got into this one too but it's still the song I like the less on this album

What exactly defines metalcore? I don't listen to the radio and haven't heard most of the bands you guys mentioned. From the bits and pieces I gathered through this thread Alexisonfire would fit this category and I happen to enjoy them quite a bit. Through a Bunch of crappy bands in a genre there's always one that will stand out and end up enjoying for some reason.

Yeah, but you said 'metal.' Not 'heavy metal with some clean vocals.'

I like it okay. The solo is good, reminds me of Guns N' Roses. Perhaps the song is a bit too long, but even so, it's not really representative of the other songs on the album.

I heard 'Bat County' on the radio, and it is almost as bad as Beast & Harlot a mon avis. Bands such as Blink 182 and Green Day destroyed punk by taking away the danger and making it more accesable for 'da kidz' to get into. The fact that now A7X are trying to do the same to metal should be a cause for concern, not celebration. Let's get the pop out of metal and get back to the good old days when the only people listening to metal were strange social recluses. Let's put the METAL back into metal, which has been bled dry by not only these popmetallers (and that now includes SOAD, to my sadness  ) but the tidal wave of metalcore, lead by such utter bollocks as Trivium, who can play their instruments but do so without any soul or belief in what they are doing. That's partly what makes BM so good, and if these modern shitecore bands had some of that spirit true metalheads would give them more respect.

What's wrong with Bat Country? It's catchy. It's got good riffs, a good solo that, like their others, reminds me of a mix of Guns N' Roses and Sonata Arctica, etc.

Metal's coming back into the mainstream. While a giant load of shit will be made along the way, there'll still be some good stuff made as well, and we may as well grab what's good and listen.

If it's any comfort, BM ain't going into the mainstream, ever. But all this 'oh! We can't let metal into the mainstream!' Fuck, not like we have any say anyway.

And that's a good thing?

True, up to a point. The only reason labels such as Roadrunner are putting out bands like A7X, Trivium et al is because the "kids" have indicated that they are interested in old skool metal. Instead of doing what they should be doing and getting older stuff, labels are putting out a mix of new and old skool, which is awful, the vast majority at least.

Hmmm...hopefully this "christian BM" fad will pass away, and we won't have to endure too many Cradle and Dimmu copiers (I'm actually suprised none have emerged yet). At the end of the day, you're right, all we can do is buy what we want and not what's forced upon us by the media.
