Overrated as in best director ever? Sure. But still a very very good one.

But can you evenly compare him to people from the 60s or 70s like say, Herzog, Kubrick, Bergmann, etc?

Kudos to QT for being clever and making the films he wants to make...they just don't appeal to me! He has also did a lot to hype directors like Wong Kar Wai, which is great. Again, I have no reason to dislike him besides Death Proof, and the irrational fans that praise him to the heavens. If people love his movies, great, but as you alluded to, if they start breathlessly putting him at the top of all-time lists, they need to see more movies.

And I don't get the Grindhouse hatred - Death Proof was dull as ditchwater, true,

There is your answer. I liked the trailers too, and at least Planet Terror had pace; however, QT was only responsible for Death Proof, he had nothing to do with the trailers or the Rodriguez movie. Take the QT out of Grindhouse and it would have been enjoyable; I misspoke originally when I mentioned Grindhouse because I forgot the name of QT's debacle.

I thought Death Proof was great. The problem with Grindhouse was that they put it after Planet Terror which is non-stop action so it kind of kills the momentum of the experience. If they had switched the order I think people may have had a different opinion.

And the trailers were hilarious. Order might have changed opinions, though not likely mine.

Tarrantino is awesome imo because his characters are unique and memorable and his stories are unpredictable but logical.

The uncut version of Deathproof was too long but I liked the concept and probably would've enjoyed the shorter version if I'd seen it.

Looper - great stuff.
Ted - got quite a few lols from me, less funny towards the end but good overall
Magic Mike - a good drama, but it was billed as a comedy for some reason.

You weren't enamored with the Flash Gordon obsession, I take it? That 1980 film is on my list of hilariously bad and fun movies, and so I got the reference and thought it was funny at first, but my god did McFarlane hammer that one into the ground. I kept thinking about all the viewers watching that no inkling of the reference and must have been bored by it.

I never saw the movie, but I'm laughing at the prospect of just beating a Flash Gordon reference to death as like a practical joke on the audience lol.

Django for a second time. Umm I think he it was edited rather poorly. There are several moments that could have been done better. The fact that James Remar plays two characters is one of the oddly unnecessary moments.

i thought it literally had less jokes. after Ted and the guy go their separate ways and try to put their lives back together there are less jokes.

Flash Gordon would've come across to any audience i think, even if they didn't know about FG specifically, they'd know "oh corny 80's show". personally i saw the show as a kid, never the movie.

The Men Who Stare at Goats - shit. fuck the Coen brothers. This movie sucks, Burn After Reading sucks, True Grit sucks, The Big Lebowski is overrated, and i'm not even going to bother with Fargo now.

yes i know we get into an argument on them and how Big Lebowski is so quotable, but i just saw this Goats one so thought i'd add to my experience with those two hacks. never watching a Coen brothers movie again.

The Men Who Stare at Goats isn't Coen's movie. Or I haven't understood you right.

ah, yes, true. don't know why i thought that. it's definitely something that i'd expect from them. either way it's a shit movie.

i'll have to give 1 more Coen brothers movie a chance then.

Fargo is the one to watch, boss. Really the only one of theirs that I really really enjoy.

I'd watch Blood Simple (thriller) or Raising Arizona (comedy). Those are their most 'normal' movies and we need to slowly indoctrinate Azrael into their world.

Really like the Coens. Maybe it's just my weird taste, but think the likes of Fargo, O Brother, Miller's Crossing, Hudsucker Proxy, No Country, etc etc all great films. Even liked that Ladykillers remake... Not saying they're perfect, though.

I think there is some overlap between fans/not fans of QT and the Coen Brothers. The Coens and Tarantino are certainly mutual fans.
