I was looking in the Nightwish reviews and noticed that this one was the only one missing. I am working on an archive review after I give it some attention, but was curious what the general opinion is on it in comparisson to the rest of their work.

Heh, I've been asking for years to have it reviewed. I think when I first brought it up I mentioned that it could be a Classic because of the influence it had on the genre and of course because it's a great album. Although I know quite a few people here will be up in arms if NW is added to the Classics list. :P Either way it's good to know a review is coming up.

I personally think it's their best.

Im not sure I consider it their best, with both Wishmaster and Century Child following it, but I do think it might be their most pure effort. By pure I mean that it feels like the most unrestrained album they have done, without the weight of the world on their shoulders (still relatively unknown at that point). It is certainly one of, if not, their most technical albums.

I would say....

Century Child/Dark Passion Play (tied)
Oceanborn
Once
Imaginaerum*
Wishmaster
Angels Fall First

*Kind of hard to properly rank this since it's only been out for about a year so we'll see if it stands the test of time for me.

Without a doubt, Wishmaster is their classic for me. Oceanborn has some of the most 'pure' songwriting as mentioned earlier so I would probably put it second.

I wonder if a week's ban for Steve would remind him to be civil to people? Getting a bit ridiculous...

I think it's funny. People need to learn to don't get things too seriously or personal.

On topic: Oceanborn is my fav Nightwish album.

Thats where I am at. It really doesnt bother me, I am just playing along at this point. I respect his obvious knowledge on areas of metal I am not familiar with, and he comes up with some really thought provoking posts. The trolling is just funny at this point, nothing more.

I heard it just after it was released and it absolutely blew me away. It's a big reason why I'm into female fronted metal so much.
For me it's not only the band's best, it's also one of the best CDs - ever.

One of their best of their earlier albums....I'd have it equal with Wishmaster and Oceanborn and better than Angels Fall First.

I think Oceanborn is a modern classic, and should be reviewed as such. It's their most influential release, since it was the album that really put them on the map, and Nightwish is a very influential band. Bands such as Edenbridge, Visions of Atlantis, Xandria, Amberian Dawn etc. would either not exist or sound very different if it wasn't for Nightwish.
