The entire career of Enslaved is very very impressive. 21 years and 12 albums.....Every album is a gem, not one misstep and many of them can be considered classics (all a matter of opinion and tastes, of course!).

There is not a lot of metal bands we can say the same for (Death comes to immediate mind...maybe Cathedral). Thomas pretty much hit it on the head.......takes some listens, but this new album is a monster.

I'll start by saying great review.

When I first started listening to this album I was not happy. The cleans were way to polished and prevalent for my taste. The songs seemed clunky and unwieldy. For about two weeks I was convinced that I did not like this album. It was slowly grown on me like most enslaved albums. I still don't know if I like it it better than axioma but it's still a great album. For whatever reason it's taking a while for me to get drawn into this album. Longer than most enslaved albums. I'm not sure why exactly but I think the cleans and the crystal clear production have some thing to do with it.

So basically I'm still some what on the fence with this one. Great review regardless of my personal feelings on this.

Light a candle, have some wine, put on a headset and sit down with lyrics and slip away into it, Snake. Svould do the trick. That's what did it for me at least.

Thanks for the kind words

Not much to add to that. Enslaved are metal gods and this album is just as enjoyable as anything they've done.

I wish they were gods seeing as they wouldn't exist.

Awful band since day one, I'm gonna buy a friend of mine their Yggdrasil demo though because I owe him for covering my ass when we worked at the same joint. Here is to these guys never releasing another awful progcrap album again.

Oh Enslaved... I concur with everything everyone has said aside from Steve, needless to say. Enslaved is such a remarkably extraordinary band. Thomas your words are as precise as ever and you have conveyed your immense admiration for this band many times before as you have done again in this great review. Hail Enslaved and the mighty reviewers here at the forums.

Enslaved have reached that status with me that if I don't like it initially I assume that I must be wrong. I felt similar to Snake on the first listen although I knew I was being overly critical. This is another great album by a band that never ceases to impress with thought provoking material that really takes you somewhere.

I agree. Enslaved is one of those bands where you have to listen to an album till you "get it".

So I listened twice today. It's gonna take awhile it's a massive album. So far I'd say I'm about 7 or eight listens in and so far the only song that has started to sink in is thoughts like hammers. Probably because I heard it the most. Anyway. The riff on thoughts like hammers is bad ass!

While not as terrible as Steve maintains, the amount of fellating that these guys recieve is definitely unwarranted.

Anything after the split with Emperor, I can do without.

Thats just because your taste in black metal is ridiculously elitist. Which, they don't even play black metal at this point so.....

They don't. I like a lot of bands from that "scene" that aren't really "black metal"... difference is Arcturus, Limbonic Art (to name a few) are actually very interesting to me, whereas Enslaved just never were.

This. Good band. Consistent. Not anything spectacular.

Don't bother yourself too much Below. It's a matter of pure taste and its severe subjectivity.

Oh I'm familiar with just about all their material; just another one of those bands (like Deathspell Omega) that everybody practically worships for reasons I could never fathom.
