That's interesting. I think it's funny when someone like myself genuinely likes a band like Slipknot and goes out their way to make it known too. What's someone gonna say about it when a lot of people like these bands are loyal to real metal and moreso than most.?

Sorry, could you rephrase? I didn't quite catch your point.

I think what he's talking about is the state of our melancholy compared to the wider spectrum of listeners that for example like Slipknot. Our taste in music Vs say, Adveser's taste. We have been left alone!

I'm saying that I like Slipknot and wear their T-Shirts to annoy the fans of all the other bands I like. I liked their albums when I couldn't have known better and also far after the fact when I did hear everything and everybody.

I think your first statement was more vivid

I guess I can understand where you're coming from.

My love for metal started when I was a kid with 90s Metallica and I still proudly admit that, and I still spin Load and ReLoad when I feel like it. It's annoying that others think I should hate the music I grew up on just because I now listen to more "proper" metal.

(wow, this thread lasted 2 posts on topic, and then got way more interesting!)

I was the complete opposite of you, Thrashtildeath. The first paycheque I got I went out and got all Metallica albums and loved them to death. But that's fifteen years ago. Now, I rarely can bare any Metallica at all as I have grown infinitely away from it. Maybe every two years or something can I play maybe their debut or RtL.

EDIT: I still love that traditional sound in Metal that Sabbath or Maiden created but can't stand Metallica anymore.

The first album I bought was the black album, then MOP and ReLoad. I liked Dio long before even hearing Slipknot. There's just no contradiction IMO because of all the links that make the giant cobweb of music i've ever liked.

Into blackened thrash like (later) Carpathian Forest and Aura Noir? Might be a good way in...

As Goat says, Aura Noir.
In thrash-black, these two:

Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising.
Abigail - Forever Street Metal Bitch

And, as you like prog, try the left hand of black... Sigh, for example.

Seconding the Aura Noir and Destroyer 666. Also, the recommendations of Trapt are some very good ones.

EDIT: Rotting Christ - Theogonia

I am glad I looked into this thread, this is a genre I have been needing to tackle for awhile.

Truth is I have spent 10 years working my way up and down Prog, Power, and so on but I have never truly tackled the other side of things. Seems like now is a good time to change that.

As to being a regular poster I should definitely do more. There is a world of information in these forums that I don't take advantage of, and though as Divine mentioned I am pretty busy with family and what not I certainly have time to be more active.

The advertising piece is trickier. Facebook has proven itself to be marginal help at best, because it floods people with so much information that trying to get someone interested in one specific thing is like screaming a message into an active jet engine, your lost in the noise. The best way to get attention of Facebook is to basically post a picture of a puppy playing a guitar with metalreviews.com written on it.

Speaking of which, I need to google search that and give it a try.....

Thanks for the recommendations, every one. There's a lot here to keep me busy for quite some time, I would have thought.

One thing, I think I need to stop researching these bands as I listen to them. The pictures of most of these guys are doing me no favours at all as I try to take this genre seriously.

A lot of the guys Trapt recommended look less ridiuclous. I appreciate that....

I don't think hardly any bands wear corpsepaint anymore. Trapt recommended a lot of newer bands, but the older bands that were recommended don't wear that shit either anymore.

The only band that I recommended that wears corpsepaint is Immortal and that's part of music and the appeal that they have stock with for a very long time. It's for show and its also for gimmicks. Immortal has a fictional Kingdom that they have created with their lyrical content which I think is very cool.

Yeah, it's not just the paint though. It's the whole "Arrrgghghghhg we are scarrryyyyy!!!!!!" approach.

I much prefer if a band just dresses normally - maybe black leather, if they HAVE to - and let their music do the scaring.

But whatever, I'm trying not to let it affect my judgment. And anyway, like i said, I think it's cool that most bands have left it behind in the contemporary scene.

Hmmm... no layers upon layers of slick production, no sensitive pretentions to grandiosity, no synths (well, not much anyway) no "clean vox" (and certainly no female vox), just black hateful and raw metal done in the old way.

Thanks for the recommendations, man. And as for what they look and dress like, well...

Sure, I don't care what someone looks or dresses like if I'm deciding if I like them as a friend. Such a thing wouldn't matter.

With regards to a band, however, I think that it just distracts from the music, which should always be the primary focus. If you need to dress up in costumes to try and scare people, it doesn't say much about the confidence you have in your music being able to represent you. It just screams of gimmicky bullshit, not to mention the fact that nothing could be less scary than grown men in make up and spikes.

EDIT: haven't had a chance to listen to even a quarter of all these suggestions yet, but so far Trapt's suggestion of Nachtmystium seems to be by far the most appealing to me...

Speaking of Nachtmystium I must give them a few spins. Have not heard of them in forever. That reminds me that I have to purchase Demise.
