I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the best metal right now is being made in this genre, with some experimental black metal rivaling it. Take that with a grain of salt because albeit these are the best songs being put out by metal bands (more rocking than any death or thrash act and more heavy than any doom act right now), it is a very simplistic genre that can't go very far. But that one album each band puts out that is super amazing is super amazing.
