In the past couple of years, as far as I can remember, I have not seen any Windir purchases, or, Windir being played; it is really quite a shame. I am sure you are familiar with the brilliance that is, Windir. What is your favourite album by them? What do you think of the members in different bands like Vreid and Cor Scorpii. This can be the thread for the appreciation of the magnificent Windir and the legacy that it has left behind.

Valfar, may he rest in peace.

never heard of them O.o but seeing how the Genre is labeled as black/folk/viking, means that it has to be at least somewhat interesting.

Windir's legacy is one with a band like Emperor.

Right. I'm not trying to compel my opinions upon yours; but either you haven't listened to them properly or have not realized their true greatness. Try 1184 or Likferd.

Windir's musical depth, originality, power, and grandeur is unmatched only by a band like Emperor.

I think Windir's greatest strength was their ability to write damn catchy riffs, which caused some elitists to write them off as Norsecore. Beyond that, I think they were masters of mixing technology with black metal in a way that added, not detracted. Their ambient interludes are second to none.

These remarkable abilities carried over to Vreid's first album, which to this day I think was constructed from leftover or unfinished Windir songs. Vreid never lived up to their debut.

Conclusion: Valfar was a genius, except in matters concerning the outdoors and frigid temperatures.

Well summed up, General.

Their riffs were extremely catchy...in a good way! And regarding Define Infinity's Emperor comparison, here is one strong similarity: neither band constructed repetitive songs. Predictable song structure patterns were completely avoided and each track felt like its own work.

One only has to listen to a solo that was played in a piece like The Spirit Lord or the structure, well, in all their songs, longer pieces solely composed by Valfar in Arntor, to realize the sheer uniqueness and utter beauty of the melodies composed by Valfar. The songs as General pointed out were not only "catchy" but also held a very good amount of musicianship and sublime melody that was and is extremely hard to find other than on an album like Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk or ItNE by the mighty Emperor. I mean Emperor progressed; they became much more of a technical/progressive BM band that pushed genres and became the originator and innovators of the sort. There was a certain kind of purity found in Windir on a primordial level that Emperor changed as they progressed. This point is by no means a negative, though (just an observation).

The melodies composed in Windir are untouched because first, their immense depth and emotional value to them, second their technical aspect to them, and third the layers of guitar and keyboards that only added to the MAJESTY of what is Windir. The Grandeur and majesty found in Windir can only be matched by a band like Emperor and their most spiritual dimensions to their music and technicality, melody, and ultimately, song structure. Valfar’s vocals, Hvall’s bass melody, and Steingrim’s drumming along-side with other members of the band created a symphony that is untouched only by a band like Emperor.

My first listen to 1184 and I Instantly though wow this sounds like early Children of Bodom only 10 times better..... I might be the only one feeling that this comparison is accurate, seeing in all Emperor is the band mentioned earlier...and Emperor and Children of Bodom sound nothing alike.... O well 1184 is still an awesome cd and a good introduction to the band IMO....

I don't get the Emperor comparison .. they are very different styles.

I have explained myself quite enough. The quality and the legacy of the music is the fundamental comparison.
