Perhaps I should have retitled the thread somewhat, but nevertheless what are some bands that have a heavier than average guitar tone for their respective subgenre. This thread is not intentioned to list the heaviest guitar tones ever, so much as to list bands that tune higher than their respective peers. For black metal Master's Hammer from what I've noticed have somewhat of a higher tone than other old school bm bands, and for older death metal there aren't many bands that rival Bolt Thrower's tone.

Burzum's guitar tone from the self-titled to Hvis Lyset Tar Oss will never be topped.

Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality
Destruction - Infernal Overkill

I'm rather fond of Satyricon's in Dark Medieval times, In Flames on Reroute to Remain, Neaera's overall tone on most of their albums outside of Omnicide, Satyricon on Volcano. Dying Fetus with Killing On Adrenaline.

Those come to my head right now.

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Satanas

The tone on Aborted's "Goremageddon" is probably the best Death Metal guitar tone ever.

That one is absolutely devastating.
Also, since Neaera was mentioned, I would like to add Heaven Shall Burn.

I need to check these out. I think Watain has always stood out especially with their latest album.

Skepticism and Wormphlegm also have some pretty heavy tunings for funeral doom.

Lord Tim uses a Bass Cabinet and a Guitar Head. It sounds super low and distorted, but not crispy or treble heavy in any way. It's like a layer of huge Bass Fuzz on top of the normal heavy metal overdrive.

Should have mentioned he is a guitarist.

Venom - Welcome To Hell has a pretty distinct guitar tone.

No mention of Napalm Death? For shame. Grind bands usually have great tones - Rotten Sound, Nasum, and so on, but ND are kings.

Doomriders on Darkness Come Alive. fuck.

Later Celtic Frost, anyone? Triptykon too.

Almost anything recorded by Kurt Ballou tbh. Young Widows - Old Wounds = oh shit.

I swear if that album had Pike singing instead of Bannon you couldn't tell the difference between it and High on Fire. That album is ridiculously metal in terms of guitar licks.
