Do you guys ever run into this? I don't have the typical long hair and grubby attire of the typical metalhead. I keep my hair short and wear video game and horror movie t shirts most of the time and wear slim fit jeans. I have vans shoes and glasses also. I'm a pretty nerdy looking guy.

I don't have any tats because I'd rather just wear a t shirt or something that has something I like on it. Piercings I think look gay on guys so I have none of those either.

So in short, some guys will try to tell me that I'm not metal because of the way I look, or because I mention a metal band that's not Pantera. This attitude annoys me and I run into it sort of off and on either hanging out with friends at a bar or at shows.

My favorite part though is that most of these folks can't keep up with me and about as metal as they get is " Slayer " anyway, so I just laugh it off and don't bother to engage because it's a waste of time.

Anyone else deal with this? Or your thoughts on dressing " metal "?

I've got a lot of band shirts, but then I have a lot of not-band shirts either.

I have long hair, only partly for headbanging, the other part is because I like it long.

I don't feel like I need to maintain a "metal" image because that's kinda silly. I just dress how I like, and if that happens to be a band shirt, then it's a band shirt.

Of course fashion is apart of the music, but when one focuses upon it instead of actually appreciating the music, and looks to the scene for the fashion in and of itself then they are posers. For metal it's pretty much just band shirts, but I personally think it's a given, because most of us like to support the bands we listen too. The bottom line being that unless your some trendy kid who buys a Lurker of Chalice shirt just to show it off, it generally doesn't matter what you wear, and to this day I've never heard anyone at a show complain about what someone was wearing

Me neither .. usually bugging someone about what they are wearing is just a convenient way of griefing someone you don't particularly like.

I've got short hair and I wear suit and ties a lot because I work in an office. When I go out, I usually wear yuppy gear.

I have about 7-8 band T-shirts which I do wear a lot about the house or when it doesn't matter what I look like.

I don't usually wear metal shirts because they are usually cut bad. Like a big sheet. I usually just wear jeans and a t-shirt or shorts. And I can't grow long silky straight hair like a Swedish dude.

Would girl shirts (metal ones) work on skinny dude?

I never really tried to look metal but I always kind of wore stuff that is black so I guess I usually do. I cut my hair a few years ago, my wavy hair simply does not look good. I don't wear that many band shirts either, save for a few really cool ones.

I cared about "looking metal" in high school.

Then I stopped caring and life is better now.

I guess I look metal, but only because it makes me feel good. I rarely go out without a bandshirt on, I have long hair and a beard. I'm quite sure I'd still look like that if that style wasn't related to metal.
I used to look completely different two years ago: shorter hair, no beard, glasses, no bandshirts, etc. I had been a nerd since I was 6 and I still was 2 years ago. With the way I look now I feel a lot more confident when I go out.
People who tell you you're not metal because you don't look like a metalhead are just stupid. My 2 best friends have short hair and only wear bandshirts at concerts but they're definitely metal, because they know what they're talking about. I've lost count of how many times I've met somebody who said my friends weren't metal. Usually those types stand there talking shit, while wearing a Metallica tshirt that ten other dudes at the same venue are wearing too, saying Slayer is the heaviest thing ever made and thinking metal was invented by Iron Maiden. It's that kind of close-mindedness I can't stand about the scene. Know what you're talking about or shut the fuck up.

I grow my hair long because I like it. It was long before I ever got into metal. I wear black because, and i guess some people didn't get the memo, that all black is the usual attire for classical musicians that metal bands adopted to show their seriousness.

I'm really clean cut with short hair. Rocking tighter jeans and a band shirt is just enough metal for me. I really only wear certain shirts which fit really well so yeah.

It's not like someone was randomly talking shit to me. I'll get into conversations with me and people will be like " Oh you don't look like you like metal " with a bit of a tone to it and what have you. It's nothing like " Fuck you not metal guy " or something, but I just think it's silly that some guys try really hard for that look.

Never ever cared about looking metal, except for a few band t-shirts. Th only thing remotely close to being metal about my appearance is my pierced ears and tattoos I guess. Even those are more of a punkish style though.
