Fear and Loathing sucked. Terry Gilliam has made some good movies and some self-indulgent crap. Especially The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to that list

But F&L wasn't self-indulgent insofar as it was just staying true to the book.

Books aren't movies though!

Pfft, I know I never should look at the films section.

The movie is fun in 30 minuteish doses. You need Hunter S Thompson's writing to make a drug binge consistently interesting though.

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus is a fun movie!

So is Fear And Loathing.

Helvetica - Documentary about graphic design, more specifically typography, more specifically the font Helvetica. It made me think about some things I hardly ever thought about but it would've been better if it was about typography in general rather than focusing solely on Helvetica. Hearing person after person voice their opinion on that font in particular got old. I liked the discussion of trends in graphic design and what emotions a certain font, colour, arrangement, etc evokes and why.

Objectified - Documentary about industrial design. It had a broader subject than Helvetica, which made it more interesting, but learning that the design of cars, furniture, computers, etc is something people think about was less revelatory. Got a little too excited about how important design is at the end.

Both movies had cool music and cinematography. Liked the shots that gave me time to think about a font's impact on a piece of text's meaning or the thought that went into the design of a certain thing.

I did not call The Other Guys hilarious and you haven't seen Dinner for Schmucks. How could you say you wouldn't call it hilarious if you haven't seen it?

I just know.

Terry Gilliam could make most of his movies at least half an hour shorter. Even his best like Brazil and 12 Monkeys are somewhat bloated and meandering. Plus Johnny Depp is vastly overrated.

12 Monkeys certainly is. Depp is somewhat overrated, but I thought F&L was his best performance.


At least we can agree Brother's Grimm was terrible.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen--I couldn't even make fun of it!

Sherlock Holmes. Not bad.

The Ghost Writer - Kept up a low key but tense atmosphere all the way through and wrapped things up well. If I had one complaint it's that Ewan MacGregor's character doesn't have much to him; mostly he reacts in a fairly nondescript way to situations he's forced into.

Fear and Loathing rules. Fuck you guys.

Dinner for Schmuks - Blah

Good thing I saw both of those on cheap night.

The Expendables - Much like the A-team, mindless action, but fun.
