Seeing as to how both are among the most influential "crossover death metal albums" of the 90's, which do you feel is ultimately the better of the two?

Tough choice for me as I love'em both, but I'm ultimately going to go with Wildhoney, for completely personal reasons. I like its more organic/natural atmosphere, and I think Pocket Size Sun is a really cool song.

Tiamat "crossover death.metal" well their earlier releases certainly, but there are no holdover elements from their prior sound on "Wildhoney". "Wildhoney" is one of my favorite metal albums, I adore every song on the album, and nothing Cynic has ever done even comes close to Tiamat.

heard Tiamat and didn't like it one bit. Not very death metal either. So my vote goes to Focus. Which is better than TIA by the way.

Wildhoney was a brilliant melding of doomy metal and mid-era Pink Floyd, way back when when it was extremely innovative. It isn't perfect, but it isn't one of the best albums of the 90s.

Focus has stupid robot vocals, and as Zad notes, Rio loves that band.

Easy choice for me.

Also: this is one of the strangest comparisons I've ever seen.

Focus. Not even close. An all-time classic versus a good album.

For some reason I thought Wildhoney was a grunge album.

The grunge band is Mudhoney, no?

I've been hoping someone would do a 'Turn Loose The Swans' vs 'Spheres' (or whatever) thread in mockery of this, but you all have failed me yet again.

I should get half credit/half failure for planning a 'Bergtatt' vs. 'None So Vile' poll.

I'll do the honors of such a thread.

BTW, my reason for comparing these two albums is that Wildhoney actually DOES remind me of Focus when I listen to it. I think it's because both albums attempt a very natural/ethereal sound. And yet, they're both "kind of" lumped into the death metal category (even though, as SLM pointed out, the death metal influence on Wildhoney is minimal, at best).
