I'm not expert on the goth genre, but I am a fan of a lot of those bands, and I tend to think Before the Dawn have a more original sound than most. Sure, it's not revolutionary or really that different, but they definitely stand out from the pack.

And their later albums are heavier.

I've read that there was a massive line-up change after this album, so I'm hoping it goes in a bit of a different direction. It's not that I don't like their sound, it just doesn't stand out as really great stuff.

The Ghost is the next album, and those were the only singles, I believe. I also think this was when Lars Eikind Eric Si (Winds, Age of Silence) joined the band, and his clean singing is much better. But I think you're right about the line-up change. If I recall correctly, this album was done by Tuomas entirely, except for the clean vocals.

This album does feature my least favorite song by them, "Ghost Town." There's some hardcore turd on it, doing guest "vocals," and he sucks. The faux gangsta shit just irritates me.

Either way, I think 4:17am is their most melodic album and the least heavy.
