I was pretty impressed with the Sotiroplous / Stevenson fight... some nice Jiu Jitsu.
Also, looks like Cro Cop's gotten his head straightened out, he was the one doing the stalking, which is how he fights best.

I dunno, Cro Cop got a gimme against a guy on short notice that didn't have much to offer other than being a tough SOB.

Sots definitely showed me up, I thought Stevenson was going to mop the floor with him.

Maybe CC just needed a confidence boost.

So in 48 hours I'll be watching UFC 111 and seeing the grand return of the best pfp fighter in GSP. I honestly don't think that Hardy stands a chance, but anything can happen.

Picks?

I didn't know Penn was fighting, I thought it was GSP fighting Hardy.

Gsp will beat hardy, but I like Hardy's striking.

Mir or Carwin?
Mir's packed on some muscle, been working on his strength training.
I got Mir, unless Carwin connects first.

That wasn't funny.

But I do agree with you that Mir should win, but Carwin has some crazy out of nowhere punches. So Mir will have to be careful. But this will be a great fight. I think the loser of this should fight Dos Santos, but that's jumping the gun quite a bit.

Just fueling the Penn vs. GSP fires, haha, they are both at the top of the food chain.
Still, Penn is a badass dude... you'd look at him and think "whata puss"... one thing watching Penn fight has taught me is don't be fooled by appearance.

The GSP / hardy fight will be nice; Hardy's standup is sweet, and so is GSP's, I'd like to see it stay standing up.

Mir / Carwin... Carwin is kind of a cipher, Mir is pretty driven and focused right now. Carwin has some heavy hands and supposedly solid wrestling, but his standup is flat and he has no head movement at all.
Mir takes this one, due to overall skill and drive.

the others:

Fitch
Pellegrino
Miller (mainly because I know fuck all about Bocek)
and
Diaz

The GSP fight will not stay standing. GSP will take it to the ground like he always does. If he can get Penn down repeatedly then he should have no problem getting Hardy down. Sure Hardy has a chance on the feet, but that's exactly why it won't stay standing. GSP will eat Hardy alive. I hope it ends like GSP-Serra2 ended, with GSP on Hardys back driving knees into his kidneys.

Also..

Thiago Alves has backed out from his fight with Jon Fitch. I do t know of a replacement has been announced yet.

Lastly..

Is it possible for Mir to be too focussed? Focussed too much on a rematch with Lesnar may cost him the fight with Carwin. Shane is a big dude with a nasty right jab, and if Mir is not careful he will on his back wondering what happened. But Mir is huge now, and I agree has more skill. If Carwin wants to take it to the ground he has to be extra careful, cause Mir can tap you out in a second. But Mir does get the victory, I think. I kinda want Carwin to win just so we can see Lesnar fight somebody different. Lesnar has only fought in 5 career fights with 2 of the being against Mir. I know we need the tie breaker, but that can wait.

Mir was smashed as I figured he'd be. Carwin is a BEAST. Seriously, bye bye Brock.

Randy Couture style dirty boxing against the cage ftw.

Unfortunately the GSP/Hardy fight wasn't even competitive. I love my man GSP, but they need to let him either move up or fight some non title fights until there's a real legit contender at WW.

Not a very exciting event overall but you got that right. You got that so goddamn right. Watch out, Brock.

I agree that GSP should move up, but if he doesn't want to then there is nothing we or anybody can do about it. Koscheck wants a rematch with GSP, so if he can beat Daley then I guess that is what's next for GSP.

I gotta say, those were some sorry ass fights. Long, uneventful and boring, the only thing interesting were the results. I'm just shocked BJ Penn lost! Credit to Edgar, he had a game plan and executed but I'm stunned BJ didn't try to switch it up or something to change the momentum. He let Edgar dictate the fight and did nothing to take control of his own fate when I have no doubt Penn is the better fighter. Anderson Silva is a mystery as well. I couldn't believe what he was doing the first half of the fight and was in even greater disbelief during the last. He certainly is making it hard for fans to like him. It's like I'm barely even excited for a potential Silva/GSP match thanks to that fight.

I think Dana Whites comments were spot on. He said that he didn't even finish watching the fight, that he was embarassed and will try to make it up to the fans. Chael Sonnen also had some good comments, he said that he has a moral obligation to society to beat up Silva.

As for myself, I still like Silva, but tonight was pitiful. He showed in the first and second round that he was clearly the better striker. So if you're so good then finish the fucking fight. As for Penn, he just seemed frustrated and dis-interested. Even after the fight he showed little emotion. I just hope that the loss has humbled him and lights a fire under his ass so in his next fight he comes out pissed off and we get to see the BJ Penn that destroyed the likes of Diego Sanchez or Sean Sherk.

The rest of the night was blah. Gracie looked old and out of it except for about a minute or two in the first round. The best fight was Munoz vs Grove. It looked like Munoz was knocked out in the first, but he came back and took it to Kendall, which is good because I can't stand Grove.

Matt Hughes Vs Renzo Gracie is a retarded fight and definitely never should have been booked for a main card. Hughes would be smashed by any semi decent WW today, and doesn't belong in the ring anymore. You can clearly tell he doesn't care about evolving his game or bringing the fight. He just needs to retire.

Renzo Gracie was just a gimme and doesn't belong in the UFC. Maybe 10 years ago.

The card was pretty hit or miss. Phil Davis kept things exciting and nailed that super nasty anaconda choke that he spun the guy into. I enjoyed Penn/Edgar and I'm thanking GOD someone finally beat BJ and took his title. I don't like him at all and it's about time someone didn't show him any respect and go in there with the will to win.

I don't know what BJ's gameplan was but I don't see why he wouldn't go for a takedown and use his ground game to beat Edgar. I honestly thought he would have bothered to do so after a round or two of the same thing. MMA is weird, sometimes. It's as if fighters are too scared to employ a total gameplan that isn't limited to just striking or grappling.

I've never liked Anderson Silva, either. Again, too many fighters give him far too much respect ( Like WTF Was Maia's gameplan? )and just freeze in the middle of the Octagon to be clowned. It's stupid. I hope the fight against GSP happens or there's someone at another weight with some balls to fight him.

Two words:

War Maia.

Silva's performance was a disgrace.

He should make a one shot co-promotion deal with M-1 and have him fight Fedor, or else be kicked out of the UFC.

I lost all respect for Silva.

No, not war Maia. What was his game plan? Throw a right hand every now and then? It was ridiculous. He had to know he was ridiculously behind by the third round and he didn't even offer anything. Fighters that don't go for broke annoy me. If you're not there to win the fight, what are you there for?

He's a Jiu-Jitsu guy. He stood at least, and did more than circle the octagon.
You should know that his gameplan was smart, as Silva is a counterstriker... charging in guns a-blazin' would have been foolish.

WAR MAIA!

White also said that he doesn't want Silva vs GSP because after that showing he doesn't deserve it.
