As most of you probably know, The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the defining alternative rock bands of the 90's. But were they any good IYO?

I vote Hit. Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness is an awesome album. In fact, I'd go as far as to say Bullet With Butterfly Wings is one of my favorite songs (rock or metal) of the 90's - one of those songs that I almost ALWAYS put on repeat when it comes up. The album also has plenty of other gems like Zero, Where Boys Fear To Tread, 1979, Beautiful, and even Farewell And Goodnight.

I also own Adore and Siamese Dream. Both of which are also great albums (favorite song on SD: Geek USA, favorite song on Adore: Appels + Oranjes), even though Adore is decidedly softer and more polished than prior SP albums.

Liked it when I was younger but now have no desire whatsoever to listen to any of it.

Mellon Collie and Siamese Dreams are definite classics.
Machina isn't that bad either.

I totally hate "Adore".

I can remember liking them the last time I listened, but don't think I've ever sat through a whole album.

I picked miss. They are just very overrated. I liked a good number of the tracks on melloncollie, but it was definitely a chore to listen to. I recently "aquired" a few of their old albums I used to have but ditched fairly quickly so I can reviews and rank them. That's pretty much it. Way overrated, uneven and overexposed. Good singles band though, with gems to be discovered outside that.

They are Hit and Miss. The good stuff is amazing, the crappy stuff very tedious and makes me press >>.

They have like 2 really good CD's that defined music for quite awhile back in the day. I like their work, I don't ever listen to them or own their albums, but when someone else plays them or it comes up on the radio it reminds me of the olden days.

Mellon Collie was sprawling, just a monster album, and a monster achievement. I still listen to it on occasion. Yes it had a lot of filler, but it so many soaring heights too. Some of that stuff ('Tales of a Scorched Earth') was incredibly heavy, and I was a sucker for the 'Tonight, Tonight' style ballad too. '1979' was a 'Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2' sort of radio beast, and despite hearing it a million times, I still love it.

Never thought much of the rest of their catalog though, I always thought Siamese Dream was pretty good, but overrated.

I really don't mind Billy's voice as much as most people do, which is a shame because they wrote some great songs in the 90's.

They're alright. When you first hear them they're really cool but then they get old.

I think they've always been a hit and miss band. Billy Corgan just writes too much material for each album and doesn't know how to trim the fat.

I prefer their darker material over the lovey-dovey sort with Adore being my personal favourite. However, like all of their albums it's quite inconsistent. I once made an ideal version of the album in which I removed a few of the songs in the latter half and replaced them with songs like "Eye" for instance, or "The End Is the Beginning Is the End". I think it was a lot better.
