Knowing - Complete and utter shit, but Nic Cage's overacting made it bearable. That shot of him in stupefied amazement as he looked at the spaceship...

I actually liked it, but it just seemed... unbalanced. It couldn't decide if it wanted to be a horror flick, or a disaster movie, or sci-fi, or what. And yeah, Cage's acting is pretty bad. He only has like... two facial expressions, and only one tone of voice. Still, I liked that it was much darker than most movies of its kind and that it went for the ending that nobody ever expects to see.

Ebert takes an interesting viewpoint:

I sort of agree with him about Cage's acting - he can be great, but generally chooses the wild man routine, which is highly amusing but hardly amazing acting. And the biblical overtones of the ending were pretty obvious to me.

Interesting review... I like how Ebert tends to focus most on the parts of a movie that most reviewers tend to overlook completely. And yeah, the biblical stuff is fairly prominent throughout, when you think about it... Not that that's a bad thing. But even my mother, who usually only sees what lies on the surface in movies, managed to see that.

Rented Lord of War a while ago and I'm beginning to watch it now, this seems to be a much better fitting role for Cage. But then again, I'm only fifteen minutes or so into it.

A little silly, but a pretty cool movie.

Cool to watch, too Tim Burton-y, not Alice in Wonderland-y enough

Synecdoche, New York - OK for the first half-hour, utter bloody tedium from then on.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

But then it's one of those films that makes you think "is it really tedious or am I just missing something?". But yeah, it's probably just tedious.

yeah plus the fact that it was so depressing. Like, I've no idea what's going on, but whatever it is, it is miserable.

Oh, indeed. I read Ebert's review, and he was all 'omg you have to watch this four times to really understand it!11' and that's the last thing I'd ever want to do, heh. Conversely, Matt Cale at Ruthless Reviews was all 'wtf is this shit' and I'm leaning towards that viewpoint.

The Crush - Ehhhhhhhhhhh, not really "good" or "bad." It falls more-or-less in the "enjoyable but not really worth watching more than once" category. Silverstone's performance as Adrian is cute. But, seeing as to how this is supposed to be a horror movie, that isn't exactly a good thing (being that she's supposed to be the film's antagonist).

Synecdoche was awesome you philistines. It's about an EMOTIONAL JOURNEY, not "what's going on".

I watched Rushmore. Movies that aren't realistic but where everything in them makes sense are awesome. Also "With friends like you, who needs friends!" is the best line.

Yeah, a REALLY BORING emotional journey. I stopped taking it seriously after Samantha Morton moved into the burning house.

Of course I knew it was a metaphor, but it was so ridiculous and heavy-handed (LOOK! A house on fire! That she's living in! Without noticing! Holy SHIT!) that I couldn't take it seriously. I'm generally a fan of artsy stuff, but this film was like a parody that someone had taken very, very seriously.

imo the point was to be heavy handed because I've known people in obviously bad situations who are totally unaware! And the movie talked about perspective so it is a commentary on HOW PEOPLE VIEW OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES vs HOW THE PERSON IN THE LIFE VIEWS IT

It was a boring commentary. Why do you think I didn't understand what it was trying to do? AND WHY THE CAPITALS?

Banlieue 13 Ultimatum - Not as good as the first one, but still fun.

It's not as charming as it thinks it is. You can only get so far on cool designs, and this movie just felt like a good idea that just wasn't developed.

Oh, also I saw Shutter Island a while back. The twists were very predictable, but it was so well done that I don't really mind that too much.

9's short was a lot better than the full length movie. Didn't have enough going on I thought.

Adam - A bit slow and when it tried to be dramatic and have stuff happen it seemed kind of forced, but it was a realistic portrayal of Asperger's and the characters were very well thought out and likable.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky

I really appreciated the symbolism. And the violence!

PS There is no symbolism.

BUT THE VIOLENCE IS REAL

The Hangover - Fun, not as uber-highlarryous as it had been hyped to me, though.
