I have the album right now and I'm afraid that it is quite disappointing. Different to their previous two releases, its slower and there's a few ballads, one in which Sotto sings so freaking high and girly that it is laughable. The whole song sounds like something that Queen could have come up with.

This is a step backwards for them as they have seemed to have gone back to their Coming From The Sky/Sign Of The Winner sound....the hardness and aggression has droped off.

Will spin it more, but I feel that I've overestimated this band....will be interesting to see what others think about it...

The song in question begins slowly, like a ballad but does build up throughout, but doesnt really get much faster. Song is called "Farewell". Has piano, orchestras, choirs, like I said in the earlier post, almost Queen like. Freddy Mercury would have loved it...

So I've listened to the Heavenly album about 4 times now. Here's my first impressions:

Carpe diem:

starts off with a pretty kick ass guitar riff, and gets into a moderate temo song. It's pretty good though. The chorus has pretty good vocals. Maybe i'm just used to their singers voice by now. The guitar riff from the begining shows upa agin in the middle of the song. PRetty damn good solo'ing on this one :O

Lost in your eyes:
If you don't find yourself humming the chorus of this song after you've listened to it, you seriously don't have a pulse or you're a terrorist lol. Great song with a totally catchy sing a long chorus!!! Verses sound a bit 80's mainly due to the keyboards i think. Excellent guitar work on the solo though :D

Farewell:

I lol'd the first time I heard the vocals on this song. AFter 4 listens though this song kind of got to me.... It's more like a broadway musical... and sometimes it feels like a more complex version "somewhere over the rainbow" Lot's of piano in this song. And yes it does indeed sound Queenish. Even the guitars sound like it could've come from a queen song. But there really isn't anything wrong with it. Song builds up but tempo stays the same. IT's quite "flambouyant"

Fullmoon:
Sounds very 80's and at some points Helloweenish to me. Catchy. One thing i noticed at this point, is that the backing vocals have become more like chanting from a choir.

A better me:

Another queenish sounding song, More so than Farewell. Lot's of piano. Sounds like it could've been written for a musical. Not a big fan of this song. Although it could grow on me after more listens.

Ashen Paradise:
:dio:
This song will chop off your head and kick it around like a soccer ball.
This is Heavenly back in form. Total ass kicker. Sounds like somethign that should've been on virus. Great guitar, speed picks up quite a bit compared to the previous songs, epic sounding backing vocals. Just awesome!

The face of truth:
Great chorus in my opinion. Mid tempo song.

Ode to joy:
Another typical Heavenly song! Fast tempo'd great drums, great guitar, and great melody :D. Also a kick ass keyboard solo that sounds like something from children of bodom or sonata arctica

Save our souls:

Ok song. Nothing really special or anything that stands out.

In general I've noticed that they've used more keyboards in most of the songs. Or maybe it just sounds that way because it stands out more. All in all a great album. But really could've been a lot better by removing the queenish songs and putting in some ass kickers :)

Anyway. For this album it gets 8/10 from me

To compare here's my ratings of their previous albums:
Dust to dust: 10/10
Virus: 10/10
Sign of the winner: 8.5/10
Coming from the sky: 7/10

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, but for future reference, we don't allow reviews on the forum, whether it be just a paragraph or more. Short opinions are fine, but we typically leave the reviewing to the reviewers; perhaps you could apply for a position next time we need more reviewers?

No harm done, this isn't the first time this has happened. :) I personally don't agree 100% with the rule, but it's there for a reason.

As for your thoughts, I pretty much agree with you, except I really, REALLY like Farewell and A Better Me; Queen mixed with Power Metal? I'm sold. :D At this point I'd give the album about a 9 / 10, I definitely like that it's more varied than previous Heavenly releases.

Helloween clone. I thought I would listen to the music before I made any judgments. I've gone through the first two albums, and a couple of songs from the new one. Sounds like Helloween on the early albums, and then Gamma Ray on everything else....actually, the new album sounds a lot like Scanner does on Hypertrace, but Hypertrace is much better. This is not a bad thing, but this style of metal gets old faster than others.

6/10 for me.

Heavenly had a huge chance to create their own destiny and become seriously huge in the power metal genre after Virus, but with Carpe Diem, I think they failed to grab the bull by the Horns.

While some of the album is good/great (songs like Ashen Paradise, The Face Of Truth, Carpe Diem), there is also some real average moments, plus Sotto's vocals are just way too high in some parts. I cringe when he hits those REALLY REALLY high notes.

I rate this album very highly, its not as good as Virus or Dust to Dust but definitely better than the rest of their work. Ill probably give it a 9/10 (as id give both Dust to Dust and Virus a 10).

This album is still solid and decent compared to the previous one, though it has some ballad, I think the vocalist has some obsession for the Queen and he pay tribute to his wonderful singing by composing Queen-like song and intepret it well. I will definitely buy this one.
