Really??? Black Metal is not a high profile genre?? That is complete and utter nonsense. If you were to take a poll of all metal bands on the planet, as ridiculous as that sounds, the overwhelming majority would be grindcore death metal, and retarded black metal. Why, your silly little mind may ask??? Because what once was the cultest and most underground genre, has become insanely popular, coupled with the fact that anyone can strum an un-tuned guitar with a fuzz box on it and sing like they are in pain, it has become oversaturated. All the little underground fan boys who I see hugging Fenriz's nutsack on the Darkthrone forum, and all the Hot Topic boyz who worship Varg, will buy anything that has a logo that looks like its bleeding. This site is guilty of it too, and you're right, I did leave out Melodeth, which is another appallingly stupid genre that is reviewed to no end.
I may enjoy obscure 80's bands more than the bands I've mentioned above, but I've never advocated doing exclusively obscure metal bands. In fact, I've suggested quite the opposite. I've been calling for classic metal reviews....I don't know how an obscure band can become classic. Some may point to the Satan review as evidence of this, but, at the time Satan were hugely popular and influential. So I'm not calling for people to only listen to bands they've never heard of before, all I'm saying is there is more value in looking to the past to discover bands that were spawned in the midst of metal's zenith, than in listening to new bands that have nothing to offer.
the classics are classics for a reason, and just because some groups are more recognized than others, should not deter you from giving them your attention.
Again, I need to clarify for all of you small brains out there. I am not saying what you all think I've trademarked, that we should only listen to obscure 80's bands....this is not true....I'm merely saying we should listen to more of them

.
A lot of modern Black metal sucks, true. But a good amount of it is killer, as well.
But what in the hell does that have to do with Darkthrone or Burzum?
It's no secret that I am one of the biggest advocates of 80's Metal, but the first four Darkthrone albums are no less pure metal than anything from the 80's. In fact one of the things about the second wave was how pure it was, and why their are so many purists that listen to black metal. Their are still honest black metal artists, is it their fault that so many ride on their coat-tails?
Dude, a lot of the bands that you list from days of yore are not as good as you try to make them out to be, and yes I've fucking heard them, in their time, not posthumously.
Bah, I'll take me some Darkthrone over some wimpy assed Satan or Crimson Gloryany day of the fucking week.
Personally, I find the whole "old-school" attitude pretty depressing. Of course, a lot of that music is gold, and deserves unearthing here through archive and classic reviews. But the idea that a weekly metal zine should be deprioritising new releases in favour of "hey look at this cool 80s band" is just nonsense.
