Not much difference.

I suppose you could say that, for example, Dream Theater were influenced by Rush, but they have that song where they ripped Muse off. One's much clearer than the other.

Suffocation ripped no one off. Their sound is unique and they sound like no one else that came before them.

what I like about Suffocation is they are that fusion of brutality and technicality lacking in a lot of the bands they have influenced today. They can till the line without being pretentious with shitty n00dling solos and odd time signatures and they aren't 0v3rbr00tal with slams and breakdowns like their deathcore sons are. They are perfect death metal

I'd say the most influential new death metal bands are

Necrophagist, Nile, Arsis, Anata, Decapitated and Martyr to some extent.

Anata are fucking ace and so are Decapitated yet two bands influenced by the loins of Suffocation that are brutal and yet they dont spoil their music with noodling.
