METAL CHURCH Calls It Quits - July 7, 2009
Seattle, Washington-based metallers METAL CHURCH have released the following statements:

"To all of our fans and friends...

"We regretfully announce that METAL CHURCH is calling it quits.

"The performance at Rocklahoma will be our last show. We have had to cancel the shows scheduled for August and that, among other things, has led us to have to make this decision.

"There has been far too much frustration and disappointment in trying to keep moving forward. The collapse of our record company, SPV, has made it next to impossible for us to continue in any kind of professional manner due to lack of tour support. This decision was not made lightly.

"We do have unfinished business in the studio, and with any luck we will have something that will be of interest to METAL CHURCH fans in the near future.

"We would like to thank all the fans that have stuck with METAL CHURCH through all these years, the lineup changes and the ups and downs.

"We can't tell you how much your support has meant to us, we appreciate each and every one of you.

"It's been a great ride."

"This Present Wasteland", the latest album from METAL CHURCH, sold 920 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

METAL CHURCH last year announced the addition of guitarist Rick Van Zandt (THE END, ROTTWEILLER) to the group's ranks. He replaced Jay Reynolds (also of MALICE), who left the band for "personal reasons."

Fan-filmed video footage of METAL CHURCH's August 14, 2008 performance at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey, Florida can be viewed below.

This title was a little misleading, with all the recent celebrity deaths and what not.

That is a shame. MC were one of those bands that I always meant to get into, but never quite had the necessary time to give their stuff my full attention. I knew SPV would take a few bands down, pity it has to be them.

SPV? That album sold 920 in its first week. Metal Church are legends in the metal genre. You think only 920 Americans heard that album its first week? Of course not. I bet well over 10,000 downloaded it even before its release. That's what is killing these bands.

SPV may have folded, but if that album had sold 20,000 copies, another label would be willing to pick them up and support a tour and such.

And this isn't happening to every other band? Funny how their labels seem to cling to life anyways.

Yeah, I'd say they'll be back in some capacity.

Bands with a cult following like this one only stay broken up if they broke up because there was something fundamentally flawed. For example, if the core members hate each other, or if an integral one dies, or something like that.

In this circumstance, the band didn't have much choice. And I'll bet they're still chomping at the bit to make music and tour.

So as long as they have a few fans to round up, I think we'll see them again.

Argh, now I regret even more missing their show in Montreal this year!

But really, Metal Church is and always has been an awesome band, and I'm sad to see them go. Hanging in the Balance is one of my favourite albums, and nearly every one of their albums rules in just about every way- hell, This Present Wasteland was my album of 2008. If they had to go, at least they went out on top. Good luck to all band members in the future, and here's hoping to a reunion sometime.

But what will happen to all the bands on SPV? Will they have to look for another label? SPV have such an impressive roster, it'll be sad to see all those bands without support.

Noooooooooooooo! man this fucking sucks! Metal Church is one of my favourite bands and seriously only 920 copies? what the fuck is wrong with kids today? Metal church released the best album of 2008 and almost no one bought it? this is a fucking shame, i feel so sorry for Kurdt to put so much effort, passion and integrity into his work and to have to call it quits because of lack of support, Metal Church always fought with adversity not only they've never sold that many albums but they have also had some of the worst line up changes in metal history, any band that can succesefully replace two of the greatest metal singers deserves my respects, i can only hope that they find a way to make things work and get back together.

I actually prefer classic MC vs modern MC but that's just me.

I'm going to do a review of Blessing In Disguise when I come back as a reviewer.

Can we pleeeeeease not turn this into another debate/lecture on downloading and how everyone on this forum doesn't buy albums? Please.

This was a bit of a shock. Sad indeed as they were on good form (I didn't hear the last album but thoroughly enjoyed the previous one). Really glad I managed to catch them back in 2006 now - they were bloody excellent.
