Haha, yeah I was trying to preempt any complaints that might come from your corner, Goat. :D

I appreciate this thread. It has prompted me to check out (so far):

Night Sun
High Tide (I am fully aware of their review on this site. That put them in my radar, this thread prompted me to listen) - Death Warmed Up is awesome, by the way
Wishbone Ash
Atomic Rooster

I've also been on a bit of a Witchcraft kick as of late, and they could probably fit into the parameters of not being from the 70s but sounding like it anyway.

I need to listen to the Flower Travelin' Band some more, though. Am I alone in getting a bit of a Satori pt. 3 vibe from Porcelain Heart?

I 100% recommend Captain Beyond. Out of all the bands that have been mentioned, they are so far my favourite.

I definitely second Hawkwind, especially since you said you were looking for spaced out stuff.

You might want to check out Camel as well. More proggy, but still really good 70's rock if you ask me.

Easily one of my top albums of all time.

But this is really very, very, very far away from metal.
