It's a different sort of insult. Horrifying, violent demons still adhere to Christian concepts. Angels playing cards and smoking is a very secularizing picture, and some people may be more offended at that.

Maybe you're over-analyzing. That picture strikes me as being more trippy than anything else. The stuff the conservative nuts get pissed about normally involve a direct, unsubtle violation of a religious symbol/a lot of gore.

Actually this is reminding me of a time when I had South of Heaven as my background and my grandfather was fixing a problem my computer had and I was shitting bricks wondering when he would notice all the inverted crosses and the big one going through the skull. It never happened.

Agreed on the symbols (case in point: Angels do NOT play cards), but as for the gore... That's more the left wing "protect our children" kind of people, like Tipper Gore. I've never really heard a Christian fundie or conservative complain about excessive gore. Besides, with the Bible being as full of violence as it is it would be highly hypocritical of them anyway.

My bad, but it's not like that would stop them, I mean how many Christians do you know that have actually read the bible? I know more non believers that have actually read the thing.

True. However, brutal depictions of mythology-related violence have been common in Christianity ever since frescoes in medieval churches scared the shit out of peasants with their pictures of hell.

Good GOD! Dio absolutely puts Ozzy to shame on this album. Not that it matters. This album flat out rules, though.

Of all the albums coming out this year, I'm looking forward to this the most. I agree, the artwork is pretty brutal all things considered. I guess their trying to go with the shock value that must of come with Dio's Holy Diver and Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell, hence a return to their roots

With Holy Diver, I can understand the shock value thing, but Heaven and Hell? I can't imagine stuck up parents actually getting fussy about that cover.

And can the new artwork even shock these days considering the artwork of bands like Cannibal Corpse or Marduk's Fuck Me Jesus?

I think, given the time period of 81, even the Heaven and Hell album cover caught people off guard. This is just speculation on my part and judging from what I've seen from a lot of metal covers of that time.

Nah, it wasn't that big a deal. I don't remember any outcry. The cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is more graphic by far, and that was released in '73.
A year later (Heaven and Hell came out in 1980) saw the release of Welcome To Hell, though I never saw it or heard it until late '82 or early '83.
Heaven and Hell was tame lyrically and graphically in comparison.

Why, by being right?

All the time?

And here is what the artist said about this particular painting:

Quote:
"Today alot of rockbands and such use the upside down cross to portray a kind of defiance towards or renouncment of Christianity. But from my research, I have gathered that this is a modern misconception, as the upside down cross (in history, not modern popular symbolism) represents the sacrifice of Peter and his passion for Christ. For me it was more important to have the cross upwards to symbolise the sacrifice of Christ for all mankinds sin. The seven people on the seven crosses in the painting depict the seven deadly sins, and these, as I tried to show them here, are eternal beings, and mankind continue to perform these sins no matter. The crucified entities are in pain, suggesting an eternal hell as long as sin exists (basically mankind) and I wanted them to float in the air to suggest a more magical power and disturbance of natural laws that would occur at the presence of satan."

That explanation saps the coolness out of the cover.

This album is pretty damn good.

Totally. The seven deadly sins? Please. Also the guy forgets that if the figure of Jesus is still actually on the cross when it is upturned, then the intended mockery is still there.

Hope everyone had a happy zombie Jesus day

Ah, I remember when I was once totally cool and sent you a fairly rare CD, free of charge.

You've changed.

A little noob-hazing, then?

I have crossed you off the To Murder/Sodomize/Cook At 450º For Three Hours/Eat list.

You could ahve just sent me a piece of shit in an oversized envelope. More tasteful? More significant, I guess.

I've heard this today. It is pretty okay. But I kept wondering if I have time to listen to something this formulaic that has been done a billion times before (even though they invented it) just because it's pretty much the best line up ever. It has some bad-ass tunes like Eating the Cannibals and Bible Black but most of it is just uninspired. I don't know what I was expecting other than this.

Well, I still haven't heard most black sabbath albums and this sounds like one of them, I'll try to get the most enjoyment out of it that I can.
