Probably something to do with the economy.

That's very logical! Remember, the people they were targeting with their protest are definitely not at all bothered by the dismal state of the economy; they're doing nothing to fix it. Just look at the bloody newspapers! Not a thing about the economy, ever.

I can't tell if he's being sarcastic, as in "why the fuck are they protesting, their governments trying to fix it already!".

Edited for grammar slip up

S =! F

Where S = the will of the Government, and F = the will of the people.

Mos Def is such an idiot. Kudos to Hitchens to not taking any shit. I feel bad for Rushdie, though, having to sit through that.

they should have just let Rushdie talk because he's smarter than them. see, look, he gets the marijuana thing right:

i can see where Mos Def is coming from since if you read stuff like this, it makes you question things like translations and the media's perspective.

Rushdie's so smart. In noodles' video, the last few minutes where Rushdie tackles America political system is pretty awesome. Mos Def is a tool.

I wanted to fucking shoot Mos Def. Hitchens' reaction was hilarious, though. Actually I'm gonna go totally fanboy on Hitchens, he was awesome just for walking onstage with whiskey in his hand :P

Rushdie is the only one worth a damn. Hitchens is a right-wing idiot, and Mos Def really needs to learn to get his point across better. Why's Hitchens so cool, Fridge?

Rushdie somehow married Padma Lakshmi when he was in his early 50s, so everything he has to say is pretty much valid by default.

His genius doesn't hurt that though.

First of all he's very intelligent, and he's got this absolute iconoclasm (come on, attacking even Mother Theresa?? Ouch) and arrogance which he can however back up with wit and logic without resorting to rhetoric. Not that he really did that with Mos Def, he just pointed out what a moron he was being and kind of verbally punched him with a few well placed "you're not thinking" comments. I just love watching him debate, he knows what he thinks and how to argue for it.

Meh. His blind support for the Iraq war and silliness over torture puts a shadow over his intelligence, and I hate his droopy lizard eyes.

I think they got divorced, DM.

It's not a blind support, he's just saying that the situation for Iraq is better without Saddam than it was with him. I'm not particularly sure I agree, but he's probably got more authority on that topic than I do, having been a war reporter there. Anyway, it's a valid point of view, as is that of using torture in extreme cases to save lives from terrorist attacks. I'm against torture, as the risk of torturing innocent people is too strong, but if you're 100% sure that you've got the guy who knows what landmark is being targeted where, I'd torture that guy myself.

That statement is dumb and really pisses me off. What you're saying is 100% subjective and completely based to perception, which is variable according to one's experience (I don't know if I'm writing good or not, but I don't care anymore, too much beer (corona victoria) tonight). In the end, innocent people is going to get hurt. You really have the balls to mutilate somebody you don't know? (don't get this wrong, is not personal)? I mean, sure is easy to kill and torture somebody if he killed your mother, or raped your sister, but I man you don't know? man, I've seen that shit, and it isn't nice...

If it's a known terrorist, then yes. Say we caught Al Qaida's second in command, knew it was him, and needed to torture him to find out where Bin Laden's hiding. Wouldn't you?

Nah, he'd have memorised a fake story which he's hypnotised into believing, and then trained to give up under torture.
