That's probably the most brutal artwork for a non-extreme band cover.

The cover reminds me of Rotting Christ era Genesis. Even the demon looks like the one on the 'In Domine Satanae' cover.

But in other words, looking forward to this. Iommi and Dio never fail.

Lately I've been listening to Heaven and Hell (the album) and Mob Rules and I'm inclined to agree.

Of all the albums coming out this year, I'm looking forward to this the most. I agree, the artwork is pretty brutal all things considered. I guess their trying to go with the shock value that must of come with Dio's Holy Diver and Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell, hence a return to their roots

With Holy Diver, I can understand the shock value thing, but Heaven and Hell? I can't imagine stuck up parents actually getting fussy about that cover.

And can the new artwork even shock these days considering the artwork of bands like Cannibal Corpse or Marduk's Fuck Me Jesus?

Maybe. You realise that very few people will have seen FMJ, being a demo and all? I agree that this H&H art isn't so bad, although you can expect certain people of a certain religion getting riled about it.

I would agree, except for the fact that Heaven and Hell aren't a mainstream band outside of metal, so I don't think many in the mainstream press would get a hold of this.

The return of Sabbath? That is sure as hell how they are going to advertise it in order to sell some copies, which it is true but not to the masses. It'll be in Rolling Stone and in the NY Times, etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot how different things are in America. I can imagine them getting some flack, but nothing like Dio got for Holy Diver.

I think, given the time period of 81, even the Heaven and Hell album cover caught people off guard. This is just speculation on my part and judging from what I've seen from a lot of metal covers of that time.

Isn't the Heaven and Hell cover (Angels smoking and playing cards, right?) a previously existing painting anyway?

That's what I'm saying. It's not like there was the Slayer demon from Show No Mercy chopping them up.

I guess that some people might prefer to see a violent, mythologically accurate depiction of a demon killing people than a picture of angelic beings engaging in such mundane, trivial and "unholy" activities such as smoking and playing cards.
