I lost my interest in Hammerfall after their third album, Renegade. Crimson Thunder, Chapter V, and Threshold are so boring and unimaginative. Still, Glory to the Brave and Legacy of Kings are two of the best examples of the 90's power/true metal boom, and are part of the soundtrack of my life, so, only for that, I'm gonna give this new baby a listen.

Great review, Zad. I'm frankly surprised at how high you rated it. There's so much hate for this band. I for one really enjoy the change of direction they've taken since Crimson Thunder. I don't seem to enjoy the fast-paced constant double-bass of power metal as much as I used to. I much prefer this mid-tempo, stomping sound.

Threshold wasn't great, though. I found it boring asides from a few tracks but this new one is great! The single is the weakest link for me (often is) but some of tracks (Life is Now, Between Two Worlds, title track) are awesome. I could really do without the over-the-top ridiculousness of Legion... but Hammerfall is Hammerfall.

Gotta admit the cover is terrible, IMO. Never been a fan of Hammerfall covers from the start. Not a fan of the song, either.. though I don't remember PC69's version and I really like the band. Have to check it out.

Threshold sucked... I will check this out for old time's sakes. Liked the band up until Crimson Thunder. My interest faded from then on, and I grew incredibly tored of their earlier stuff too..

Really, guys, this is so, so much better than Threshold. Lots of great songs... fine, they haven't really changed their style much but they've given the songwriting a kick in the ass, and it shows.

Honestly....this band should not receive reviews anymore. I'm a huge proponent of bands not changing their sound....but I have to say this is overkill, and I usually only like it when the bands sound doesnt suck. How many times can Hammerfall release the same album?

I have to agree with Zad here. This is the best Hammerfall album since Crimson Thunder. The music is still Hammerfall, but unlike Threshold there is some good songwriting here - simple, but good. I say give it a chance, it might surprise you. I think Zad's score is spot on.

Worst moments - first minute of Legion, the ballad, the cover song.
Best moments - the rest of Legion, Life is Now, the instrumental.

A friend of mine also thinks this new one is great, and he didn't like anything the band put out after Renegade.
