Miss.

IMO they're quite shit, and while I wouldn't go so far as to say they ruin the album, they do tarnish the listening experience somewhat. Obviously it's still a classic though.

What do you guys think?

It's black metal, it's not supposed to be good.

They're awesome. All Black Metal needs a bit of suspension of disbelief - men in leather and panda paint, after all - and ol' Csihar's a great vocalist.

Maybe the vocals are an acquired taste then. Personally, I find them quite annoying, and I think it would have been better with Darkthrone style vocals.

You could be right, but if you listen in the right mood they're very effective. Of course, Mayhem's not the sort of Black Metal that you can listen to whilst estatically happy, but part of what made Ordo so good for me was the vocals. They're original, certainly, marks Mayhem out from other bands.

Black Metal's not really a genre you can figure out easily. Like all good music, it might take time and distance and change in circumstance before you realise its greatness... come back to it in a year or so and try again.

A year? Damn.

Although I'm rarely in an ecstatically happy mood, I don't really like listening to music if I'm in a (very) bad mood TBH.

Really? There's nothing like My Dying Bride if I'm depressed, or flowery Power Metal or whatever. Music can be affected by moods, and the other way around.

I'm more into music putting me into moods, like when you listen to a record with atmosphere, you get transported into it, so to speak.

I know what you mean, but often I have to be in a certain mood before I can be bothered, say, listening to an album full of ten minute tracks. Depends, really.

Miss.

To be honest, I've been listening to that album for a long time and the vocals have never grown on me. Great record, overall, though.

Isn't black metal supposed to be ugly? What to bm vocals have to be like to be "good" for bm?

HIT.

Attila's great, and if you really want to hear Mayhem with shitty and downright ridiculous vocals listen to any album with Maniac. That guy isn't even worthy of smelling one of Atilla's farts.

Having seen them perform those songs live: total hit.

Utter hit, they're unique and work the best in "De Mysteriis..." I feel.

He does sound better with Sunn O))), though.

hit.

one of the most distinctive vocalists in black metal, he adds a lot of the atmosphere to the album.

Hit. His vocals add a wierd creepiness to the album. Although his vocals on ordo ad chao are definitely better imo.
