This has probably been covered before, but I'm too lazy to search, so here goes again.

My band recently got a new bassist, and though he's not too bad, he's pretty new to metal. He enjoys lots of it but just doesn't know much. So I wanted to compile a cd of songs featuring awesome displays of metal bass prowess. I realize this is a bit of an oxymoron but I thought you gentlemen might have some suggestions anyway. What do you got?!

So far I'm going to include some tracks by Quo Vadis, Origin, Unexpect, Augury, Atheretic and Brain Drill.

Not all strictly Metal, but all have some excellent bass playing. Also, Brain Drill is pretty terrible.

Yes. I might also have him listen to BtBaM--Prequel to the Sequel since Viridian isn't really metal bass, though it is amazing.

Other suggestions:

^probably my favorite bassist in metal.

What kind of metal do you guys play?

In any case, works from Steve Harris and Stevie Digorgio is a must to cover the basics.

Guys, this isn't the right way. Start simple with Motely Crue. Throw in some Robin Trower and Led Zeppelin after that. I would also suggest some early Danzig.

Playing really complicated lines doesn't mean you're better. For me, simplicity is always the best.

Oh your probably right; starting someone out with the magnum opus of extreme technical death metal.

Even if its someone with the skills of Tony Levin, you can't expect them to pick up the spirit of a style of music with the most complicated material.
