I'm writing my diploma essay on the factors that unite metal fans as a social and cultural group and I plan on going to Wacken this year to do my fieldwork, i.e. interviews and surveys... Should be a blast!

That's awesome. Reminds me of Chris Dunn (correct name?). What's your major?

It sounds like Wacken needs to step it up and start filling out that roster more or this one might be disappointing compared to the past fests.

I wish I had been there... But maybe my time will come somewhere in the future, who knows.

Sam Dunne, no?

As for the lineup:

AMON AMARTH
AXEL RUDI PELL
CALLEJON
CATHEDRAL
EINHERJER
EPICA
HAMMERFALL
IN EXTREMO
IN FLAMES
KAMPFAR
KORPIKLAANI
MACHINE HEAD
NEVERMORE

TRISTANIA
WALLS OF JERICHO

Bolded are the ones I'd bother watching. Bit weak, isn't it? Who the hell wants to watch boring bands like Walls Of Jericho?

Cathedral, Machine Head, Amon Amarth not much more than that. Machine Head is awesome live though and I'm sure Amarth is too.

Out of that list I think Axel Rudi Pell is the only band I'd like to see live. Is this the whole "line-up" for next years Wacken?

I'm not majoring in anything, I'm doing an International Baccalaureate and I need to write a 40 page essay for it. So I chose social and cultural anthropology. And yes, Samm Dunn's documentary will be among my sources.

Not worth going in my opinion. 50,000 is way too crowed for a 3 day metal festival. You'll hardly get to see the bands close enough, plus the line-up isn't mind-blowing either (except Amon Amarth, Kampfar?) I would rather go to Party San 2009, where I'll see far better bands and its not too crowded. Or try Summer Breeze instead..

Bear in mind that the line up is far from complete, I doubt they even know who the headliners are yet. Plus it's Wacken's 20th anniversary, so who knows who they might pull out. There were rumors of Alice Cooper or Black Sabbath, so I'm still excited.

I'm not sure if I'm going next year, but probably the year after that. Though you guys shouldn't be so harsh on the current list as it's still early days. At least there isn't Shitium.

BTW a friend of mine went to this year's Wacken and he missed Opeth to get his shit signed by Sonata Arctica. I nearly throttled him.

I'm sure that list isn't complete and more bands would be added into the bill soon.

Ah fuck, I really wanna go for Wacken but finance has always been a bitch. I might be heading to India to watch Maiden in February and if that happens, I'd have to skip every other festival after that. But anyhow, I'm bent on Wacken 2010 as all my buds would be working and saving up shouldn't be much of a problem. See you guys there! 2010 I mean.

Yes its far from being finished, there will be around 80 bands in the end. With some majors sometimes announced late. As for rumors, I heard Metallica or AC/DC as well when we were there this year (review coming up soon, but the bottom line is its a festival that should be experienced by every metalhead at least once in their life). For Maiden there was around 60'000 people, and believe me, that was CROWDED ! I don't like crowds so while I loved the show, I didn't like the pushing, the crowd diving and other stuff... but I guess it cannot be avoided :)
