I've always thought that was a silly and pointless question. It can be put to any band.

Why listen to Pink Floyd when there are other bands out there being more Progressive? Why listen to Metallica's early albums when there are other bands out there doing things heavier, thrashier, and better? What are Symphony X doing that every other Progressive Metal band isn't?

See my point? And I'm not even a Trivium fan by any means.

they have better riffs, better vocals (although i don't like his clear distinction's between his three 'voices' - gruff semi-singing, singing, and screaming - the vocal lines themselves are all kinds of awesome), better songs, and much better production than any similar sounding bands that i've heard, except Protest the Hero :D

It is silly.

Mainly because being heavier or faster or more progressive or whatever doesn't necessarily equal better.

This would fall under the less is more rule.

i don't think that Zad was implying "more = better" in his question

Ah, but, Pink Floyd do something that other bands don't, have a sound of their own, as do Metallica's early albums. Trivium have a million clones that all sound the same. You can't tell me you find old Sodom and old Metallica similar in sound.

Trivium, Shadows Fall and Bullet for my Valentine combining the old school 80s Thrash sound with modern melodies and very catchy vocals in the chorus or verse.

They are not like other Metalcore bands like Killswitch, because they have more thrash influence and they are not like other Emo bands, because the music is heavyer.

Why listen to Slayer or Testament when Destruction or Kreator are harder and faster?

And in the end, I'm listening to Trivium, BfMV and Shadows Fall BUT also to Sodom, Slayer, Kreator, Destruction, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament and so on. And comparing Trivium with Sodom is the same as comparing Metallica with Kreator.

There's not a hint of eighties thrash in them. Not in Trivium, not in Shadows Fall and certainly not in a fucking gay band like BFMV. Having thrash rhythms in your rhythm sections does NOT make it a valid eighties thrash element.

They have excellent, catchy and somewhat original rythme and lead guitar work,
I like the fact he uses three types of vocals : growling/screaming, gruff and clean. I like that it has heavy parts and the way it does it's transitions with the very catchy choruses. All this mixed together with awesome solos makes an entertaining melting pot that elevates them above the other bands considered to be in the same category.

here's my favorite song from the album. The thing I like the most is the sick intro and outro.

See, this is the kind of response I was after. I find them annoying - I suppose it's all down to taste. I will give that song you linked to a chance, though.

Edit: the vocals are dreadfully annoying. The music itself isn't bad. Pity.

Very well-put. I will also contribute that Trivium is WAY more thrashy than any of their metalcore counterparts, Shadows Fall being no exception.

The last Shadows Fall for example had many many 80s Thrash elements. Like Trivium on Crusade. Shogun has less elements than crusade, but they are there.

Particularly because thrash is mainly the rhythm section. The uffta beat, the staccato riffs...
