88/100 for me, because I think the good songs are amazing, and the bad songs are terrible, no down the middle for me.

The Day The Never Comes is, surprisingly, my favorite song of the album. I dunno why, but maybe it's the simplistic style to it.

On that note: Here's what I gave the metallica albums (based on my own criteria)

Kill 'em all - 88
ride the lightning - 91
master of puppets - 96
and justice for all - 94
metallica - 90
load - no quote yet
reload - 78
st. anger - no quote yet
death magnetic - 85

please note that out of 233 albums, only 6 have gotten above a 95 from me and an album has never scored below a 60

And these are fair ratings. I gave every song a rating between 0 and 10 and I got 8,5 as average + 0,5 extra bonus because it's finally after 20 years a real "Metallica" Album and no commercial compromise (TBA,Load,Reload) or midlife crisis explosion like St. Anger.

It sounds as if it's from the heart. Fuck the mainstream. Fight the power. Metal up your ass.
:D

Have you really never heard an album that you thought was worse than passable? I really don't see how thats possible- surely out of 233 albums there has to be one you don't like.

Anyway, if we're playing this game:

Kill 'Em All: 88
Ride the Lightning: 94
Master of Puppets: 77
...And Justice For All: 80
The Black Album: 58
Load: 35
Reload: 40
St. Anger: 3
Death Magnetic: 50

Well, I wouldn't exactly get through a whole album if it would end up like that. In case anyone is wondering Godsmack's first album and Mushroomhead's latest album are two lowlight's of my collection.

I have been in the fortunate position for the last five years that I could listen to albums before I bought them, and that situation has nothing to do with the internet either. It does now, but thats another story. I wouldn't buy an album I know I won't like so it would never have the chance to get scored.

Take into consideration I would never analysis something like a motorhead album (because it would get a low score because I'm not really a fan and they don't necessarily have attributes I look for in a great album. In other words, I know my limitations and if itsn't my thing i'm not going to insult it either)

The deal is that a song I don't like gets a 5/10 if it is technically competenant. think in terms that 5 is zero and anything less is a negative number (like a negative reaction)

7's are songs I like but rarely will listen to
8's I like and listen to on occasion
9's are good anytime
10's are masterpieces

average those out and you would have a hard time getting anything below a 75 foir any decent album. The inverse is also true. Only one album I'v ever heard was all 10's

and that was a bad count - 11 albums have exceeded 95 (or 9.5) actually out of 223 albums.

To answer your question, somewhere around a 7.5 would mean I liked the album depending on the quantity of great songs. I might not like an album thats a mix of 7's and 8's, but I certainly like an album that has two 10's a couple of 9's and the rest is forgettable or sucks, even though it would get a low score.

I feel that Hetfield's vocals really harm the album; he held back too much.

I agree with that. I think hetfield sounded somewhere between a tired Black album version and st. anger of his vocals. His vocals were not the best, but they weren't distractingly horrible either. They got the job done.

I have to agree with holy terror on this one. It is ok and a decnt attempt, but with so much out there not worth the $15. I bought it , basically cause im a discog freak, but i dont see me spinning this that often. It may be because i have been more enamored with viking metal or Euro/power metal, but it just does not grab me. There are pieces of songs that r cool, but all-together the songs dont stand out in my mind alone. I still like heavy/death/black/thrash, but if this is thrash then there is alot better thrash songwriting and power going on out there. This just has the major label/name stamped on it which certainly helps. I would score this about a 68 i guess. granted i have only listened to it through about 4 times, maybe after more spins I will be able to change that quote.

I do believe that age is against them, alot of older bands I tend to not like the newer material in various genres of metal or music in general for that matter. Heck listen to new Elton John vs the 70s stuff????

Im not sure Age is a good thing in music, when it comes to songwriting, passion, dedications, desires, and creativity. Priorities in life change and it just makes it too hard to give music your primary focus. Im not saying that it is not being done by somebody out there, but it is very hard and few and far between thats for sure.

About Death magnetic... It remembers me a lot the Black album overlonging the songs. In some ones it works, in others is just boring. The unforgiven III & Suicide & redemption are terrible. But the first two songs, My apocalypse & The Day That Never Comes are very good, I really love the thrash part of this one. The rest is just ok, inmo.
It's a comeback, but not a great album.

Actually I think his vocals sound better than ever. Sounds more controlled, more range, more natural of his voice, less throat voice

Wasn't too bad. My conclusion is: good if you compare it to St. Anger, it definately has its moments, it seems like a honest attempt to bring back the old days but it lacks real 'wow, awesome'-songs. Not bad in the end. I'll give it a fair 70/100 maybe 75 when I listen to it more.

I agree with who said that Puppets is the most overrated of the classic four; personally I much prefer the songs on AJFA and that To Live is to Die is one of the greatest instrumental songs ever.

Yes I did. Keep in mind that it's a metallica rating.

The album sucks but the dvd was far better. 5 years later, I still can listen to 5 songs out of 11 which ain't bad.

But in a overall rating, with 1000 of cds, I would rate it 20.

and someone else rated it 78
