(I think I'm saying that right)

Now that the album officially is out, I thought it'd be interesting to compare the poll from the Do You Think Metallica Can Make A Comeback?-thread with the results.

I say "hell yes".

Add a "somewhat" option.

I'd rather not have an option like that, unless people insist. I find them to be uninteresting since they don't really say anything. It's like saying 'maybe'.

It's not a classic, but it's a lot better than the past few albums they put out. I'd call that a comeback.

It's not an amazing album, but they've guaranteed themselves commercial attention, plus there'll be lots of postive reviews, so yes all in all.

i haven't heard it and probably won't but pitchfork's review seems to get the general reaction to it right:

Quote:
The anticipation for Death Magnetic has split along two lines: hope for a return to form, and schadenfreude.

The album fulfills neither expectation. It tries mightily to recapture Metallica's former glory, but only does so partially.

For me they have. Its been a looooooooooooooong time since Ive been excited for a Metallica album and even longer since I wanted to listen to it more than once.

They've been doing that for the last 20 years.

I want to put "somewhat" too since this one isn't a complete return to form but the next one if it continues to progress should be amazing.

well if by comeback you mean returning with a good album ( I rate it around 78%), then I say yes.

Sure, it's a pretty catchy, and while not spectacular, solid album. I do plan on purchasing it, and have liked every song I've heard from it,which is just about everything but The Unforgiven III. Sirius Satellite Radio promoted it pretty heavily, so I got to hear a good chunk of it. It's not 80's Metallica by a longshot, but if you're still expecting that maybe you should awaken from your coma.

It is a decent album, but as someone else said, they haven't recaptured the respect that metal fans could have for Metallica. If they had released something like "The Formation of Damnation", I would have said, "fuck yes". But while they abandoned the path of suckiness they were on before, they haven't quite returned to form. The next album should be better.

What about that?

I do agree they made a comeback but the compression and saturation within the final release is a disappointment.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I think they definitely made a comeback with this record. Id rate it 85/100.

Yes. Even though, being that I'm been a fan of everything they've done up to St. Anger, it wasn't necessarily a HUGE comeback. Nonetheless, with Death Magnetic, they definitely bounced back after St. Anger quite nicely.

Its a comeback in that its better than St. Anger, but sorry... Making an average album, even if your last album sucked incredibly, is not a comeback, no more than Slayer's latest was a comeback, or The System Has Failed.

oh come on there really isn't anything wrong with this sound. Isn't thrash metal soppose to be raw and slightly undermastered. You can pick up any old-school thrash album and notice how horrible the mastering sounds compared to everything else but black metal. i don't hear anyone complaining about other thrash bands that come out with new albums with lower ended mastering. If you really want to remaster or redo an album, write a petition for St. Anger. Replace the drums with real ones.... oh and how about adding a bass guitar to ...And Justice For All.
leave Death Magnetic alone....
