Aren't you going to listen to the album with a better sound than the leaked version before?

All I said was to tune in Monday, not that the review's finished.

Oh my god, have you listened to Metallica before now? That piano intro is the musical equivalent of stock footage! They've had orchestras and stuff before, on a little-known album called S&M, and there was actually a Metallica album with progressive elements called ...And Justice For All, which was out many many years ago.

Seriously, your post made me

Don't forget Nothing Else Matters, which had some symphonic orchestrations in the background.

If you do a search on the main page you'll see that Zadok reviewed Death Magnetic and that it only received a 73. Are you kidding me? Load (of crap) received a 79 and this only gets a 73? Wow...

Death Magnetic is WAY better than Load. Seriously...a 73?

Say it aint so, Zad.

That sounds fair to me... Load is an excellent album where Metallica took the risk to change their sound while Death Magnetic is just another "back to the roots" album... Hardly risqué...

And 73 means it's a good album, doesn't it?

Yes, sounds fair.

I'm expecting the review on monday then! :dio:

If Load got 79, DM should get 120. ;)

Load is nothing more than 5-6/10 or so. At least for Metallica standards.

By the way, the sound IS a little bit overdriven. MP3Gain said, that every song was way over 100db.

no no no.... i have those albums.... i know S&M all too well. It would be considered to be more Symphonic Metal than Progressive Metal. ...And Justice For All ain't Dream Theater or Queensryche or "Son of a Seventh Son". though to Live is to Die did have progressive elements. Unforgiven 3 is way more unconventional than any other progressive like ballads they have done before.

what are you kidding this a hell of a lot better than "United Abominations" which got an 85!
Death Magnetic should get an 80 to a 90. The "System Has Failed" got an 80.... what, thats back to basic thrash for megadeth. "We've all come for you" has an 85. what.! Christ Illusion is nowhere near as diverse as death magnetic. yet DM would get ranked lower.........

Death Magnetic came in the mail actually yesterday (yes, Amazon delivered my copy a day before the official release date :)), and the first spin is now complete.

Overall, I must say. This is definitely classic Metallica. In fact, I'd say it's the thrashiest thing they've done since Master Of Puppets (yes, even more so than And Justice For All). Of course, there's the occasional Load/ReLoad influence, as well as a subtle St. Anger influence in some of Lars' drum parts (fortunately, the better parts of his work on St. Anger were the influence - and no, there's no Steel Drum Snare this time). Even the production has a classic 80's thrash feel to it. None of that overly-glossy Load production or intentionally-awful St. Anger production. Whether some will like to admit it or not, this is a bona fide thrash metal album.

Now for the negatives: Hetfield's vocals just don't fit the music very well. Occasionally, he succeeds in harkening back to the Master Of Puppets-style of vocals, but usually he sounds just a little bit better than he did on St. Anger. To be fair, he was never a spectacular vocalist to begin with, but his voice just doesn't fit the music on Death Magnetic as well as it should. It suited the more bluesy style on Load and ReLoad a lot better. The songs also could've been clipped a little shorter. Although, may be when I listen to the album a second time, this won't be as big a problem. I also get the impression that, at times, the thrashing on this album is a bit forced. Particularly, on That Was Just Your Life, some of the Slayer-like parts just sound out of place and unnecessary. Like they were thrown in to silence the people who accused Metallica of not being able to play fast anymore.

Still, this is a pretty solid thrash album. And certainly the best thing Metallica's done since S&M. It really does sound like the missing album between And Justice For All and The Black Album. In fact, it sounds and feels like a Summer 1989 album IMO (kind of like the Testament album Practice What You Preach, specifically).

I'll listen to it a second time and then write a review for it on Epinions.[/i]

Just stop it, dude. You are way to subjective. If you had reviewed death magnetic it would have received a classic status.

Odd that Load gets a 79/100 here, while Youthanasia (by Megadeth) got a 73/100. Youthanasia's a considerably better album IMO.

I'd rate both albums like this:

Load - 84/100
Youthanasia - 94/100
