I must say then that Metallica REALLY did a nice job of getting themselves into such a pickle.
I'd like to point out, though, that this is also the first serious attempt Metallica's made at returning to their roots (St. Anger was NOT a serious attempt at it IMO). So, much like with Megadeth's The World Needs A Hero, it should be obvious that Metallica will probably need at least one album to "regain their bearings", so to speak, and get back on track. Megadeth IMO did it with flying colors on The System Has Failed. I don't see why Metallica can't also do it, if not on Death Magnetic then at least on their next album. Assuming there will be one.
Yes, but unlike Meth Diabetic, The World Needs a Hero was actually a very experimental, diverse album. I think that DM is the best that we're going to get from Metallica in the near future... haven't Megadeth put more albums out than Metallica, anyways? They've had more of a gradual slant away from Thrash than Metallica's, I'd say.
Let's compare the two, shall we?
Metallica:
Kill'em All - Thrash
Ride The Lightning - Thrash
Master Of Puppets - Thrash
And Justice For All - Prog-Thrash
The Black Album - Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
Load - Hard Rock
ReLoad - Hard Rock
St. Anger - Convoluted Nu-Metal
Megadeth:
Killing Is My Business - Thrash
Peace Sells - Prog-Thrash
So Far, So Good, So What? - Thrash
Rust In Peace - Prog-Thrash
Countdown To Extinction - Semi-thrashy Heavy Metal
Youthanasia - Heavy Metal
Cryptic Writings - Heavy Metal (with a couple Hard Rock songs)
Risk - Hard Rock
The World Needs A Hero - Heavy Metal
The System Has Failed - Thrashy Heavy Metal
United Abominations - Thrashy Heavy Metal
I guess you're right. Although both bands, nonetheless, have had similar musical progressions.
