Great review there, Zad. I agree with the score completely. 90+ is a score I'd reserve for their early albums Wolfheart and Irreligious and maybe Anno Satanae, too.

Either way, this album is a great one and the closest Moonspell has come to Wolfheart in over 10 years. Kudos for the Septic Flesh mention... way too many people don't know this long-running band (or early Poema Arcanus, for a little more extreme-ness).

Even today, I still think that Wolfheart, even if it is a very good album, sounds amateurish compared to The Antidote. (amateurish in their composition, mostly)

Night Eternal is one of their strongest release if not their best one yet.

And I agree, Septic Flesh's new one is

This band has done no wrong in my eyes. When they experiment, they do so with grace and style, never coming off like anything but Moonspell.

I personally don't think the band began to hit their stride until Sin/Pecado. They were a "black metal" band for a very brief period of time (the Serpent Angel (Morbid God)/Anno Satanae/Goat On Fire demos). Under The Moonspell is one of the oddest EPs you'll hear from a band just one year removed from near traditional black metal. So I always find it odd when people claim that Wolfheart and Irreligious are "black metal." Pffft! Great albums, but not black metal. Wolfheart has a bit, Irreligious has none.

What am I saying here? I'm at work and keep getting interrupted and forget what I was typing. Haha.

Either way, there isn't a turd in their collective underpants. Every album is at least very good, but most are excellent. This album is one of the latter.

And those wanting to hear what these guy would be like had they continued on that Anno Satanae/Goat On Fire road, check out Hermeticum by Daemonarch. Or check out Under Satanae, the re-recording of Under The Moonspell, the two demos, and the Morbid God demo. Both are killer!

This is the kind of stuff that confuses me. This album is nothing like Wolfheart.

Scorpion Flower is a cool song. So is Spring of Rage. This album is cool. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

This is indeed a cool CD. The title track is amazing. And in terms of slower songs, I think I prefer Dreamless to Scorpion Flower, but they're both great songs.

Right, it's not Wolfheart. It lacks the folkiness it had and the atmosphere. Sure Wolfheart sounded amateur-ish like it has been said but the point is, it's still a classic and the band's most respected work. And I agree with you saying it's not black metal. It was black metal-ish in nature because of the vocals but it was extreme goth with folk elements... or something like that. Besides I'm biaised because Wolfheart is the one metal album I first listened to and bought so... :dio:

What I meant by that is that in terms of extremity and atmosphere, it's the most extreme and evil that the band has sounded since then. Night Eternal has the perfect balance of Fernando's brutal vocals (he never sounded this evil IMO) and his goth-ish croon that fits Moonspell so well. Memorial was good and at times pretty intense (Finisterra is still one of their best songs ever!) but the lack of Fernando's clean voice made it a bit boring to me... it was too samey, although some songs were awesome.

Damn, how could I even forget about Daemonarch... and cheers for mentioning Under Satanae, that's the one I meant but for some reason, I mentioned the demo version, haha... those re-recordings are just awesome. I'm usually not big on bands re-recording stuff because it usually just ends up being a suckfest (StormblÄst, anyone?).

@Legacy Of The Night & traptunderice:

As far as slower songs of the band, I also prefer Dreamless on Night Eternal but I'd have to go with Sanguine for my all time favorite from the band. And I love Spring of Rage too. It's the most rockish and violent song the band has written in a while. Some songs were violent on Memorial but not rocking like this.

Phew... sorry for the long post! :P

In the end, this band can do no wrong, simple as that :)

@Esiel : I agree with everything you said, by the way. Wolfheart is also very important in my "metal education" and means a lot to me too. The folk elements, the incredible atmopshere...what an album!

But when I listen to Night Eternal or The Antidote and after, listen to Wolfheart, it's like

I can respect someone that admits being biased. :dio:

Either way, Moonspell are awesome. We're on the same page there. And yes, Under Satanae is a killer album! The Under The Moonspell EP is, for lack of a better word, weird. Haha. It's decent, but the band sort of went too far beyond their home and got a bit lost, I think. The re-recordings just pulled in all those loose ends and tightened that bitch up!

Killer fucking album especially, the first 2 tracks. You guys should look around for the bonus track Age of Mothers, it's definitely worth it.

The re-recording almost killed me !

Yeah, Age of Mothers is a great song, too bad it's only on the limited edition. Also, for those who haven't heard it, the bonus track from Memorial, Atlantic, is also a very good song. Moonspell always seem to have some good bonus tracks with limited editions.

For me it's great because every time Moonspell release an album, I'm abroad and I get to buy the limited edition.
