Nirvana, having listened again, really just are a very bad, garagey version of The Melvins. Cobain's championship of them was the only good to come from his smackhead life, and as much as I like Foo Fighters, Nirvana just sound terrible in comparison.

except the melvins never wrote a song as good as any of the songs on Nevermind

WAT

I struggle to think of a bad song they've written - song, not noise - what about Honey Bucket, ffs?

Melvins have lots of good songs but all the songs on Nevermind are great/bordering on perfect.

Yeah it's fun to hear the same chord progression played over and over again.

What about Iron Maiden then? They use basically the same chords over and over again.

I sense a certain cockyness, like you've just become a professional musician or something.

Yet they remain interesting, because Iron Maiden are excellent at arranging their songs in a constantly varying perspective. But Iron Maiden do get boring after a while, it's true.

Also, Iron Maiden don't use the chord progression as a basis for the song, they use it as a simple backing to vocal and guitar melody. The part of the song that you remember is usually not the chord progression.

+1!

Maiden are the kings of recycling tunes but even if they had a thousand songs with the same chord progression, they all sound fresh. I've never been bored with Maiden, their song writing has something special in it.

On the topic of grunge, metalcore and deathcore, I can't comment much. I do like a little bit of grunge, but metalcore and deathcore is something I find hard to digest. If the MC/DC bands were instrumental bands, I think I'll like them a lot. The vocals are just annoying.

EDIT: Ok, I've just watched the Unearth vid on youtube. I thought we Malaysians were the only idiots with all those slam dancing and karate chops. Really annoying.

The fans are annoying, true, but Unearth kick ass.
