Pieces of all the band member's faces put together is the best theory.

Great fucking album, though hopefully the next one will have more heaviness.

Why do you people keep saying this? It's just as heavy as any other Opeth album except maybe for Deliverance.

Except that's not true. There's far more mellow stuff here than on Ghost Reveries. I reckon the production is a factor here too, it doesn't hit you in the face like GR did.

Anyway, this is getting a lot of play at chez Mintrude, should feature on my end of year list.

Yeah but Ghost Reveries was a bit of a douchebag album. Well, no. Just The Grand Conjuration fucking pissed me off. I don't know, this is the only album that was heavy enough to a) keep me awake in bed and b) make me want to headbang.

Neither of those have happened since I first heard Cryptopsy. There may be mellow songs, but the heavy parts are real fuckin' heavy; which counts for a lot more than end-to-end brutality. Opeth are all about the juxtaposition of melody and brutality. :dio:

The metal parts of this album remind me more of Deliverance than of Ghost Reveries. Ghost Reveries sounded like Dream Theater with a death metal tilt.

I can't stand Dream Theater in the least. Best songs on Ghost Reveries were Ghost of Perdition, The Baying of the Hounds, and Beneath the Mire. Probably the best opening trio to any album I've ever heard. Anyway, how do you guys not call GR a soft album? It has Atonement, Hours of Wealth, and Isolation Years. Which actually probably adds up to more soft time than is on Watershed.

Er, fuck no. Those 3 are the shortest songs on the album. Around 50 minutes of heavy to 15 of mellow. And Grand Conjuration is what got me started listening to extreme metal, so its always awesome. :dio:

I listened to this album for the first time today. Overall, great album. Although I do prefer Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries overall (that may change as I listen to Watershed more, though). I'll admit that I do prefer the heaviness of those two albums, but I like how Opeth is trying to take their music in some new directions. The Lotus Eaters is probably the overall best song.

Soulsociety: Yes, but my comparison was to the soft parts of Watershed. It doesn't have many more soft sections, and who really cares in the first place? It's Opeth.

Faffel is right, all that start/stop riffing in The Grand Conjuration is horrendous.

Hmm... This album is not nearly as good as Ghost Reveries... Not yet at least.

It's Opeth, so it's bound to be a grower.

Heh, it's pretty amazing, after I read this thread I understood you can barely find 2 people who actually agree about anything regarding Opeth.

...what a band.
