But Charles, you're missing the point entirely. What makes it possible for the elite to cause wars for resources, what stops the plebs from saying, 'oi, stop it?' Bringing Christ to the darkies, of course. The protestant work ethic. The slave mindset, right-hand path. Etc.

And no-one here is saying, from what I can see, 'YEEHAW BURN THE CHURCHIZ!!!11' We're simply speaking out in favour of our right to say, 'that's bollocks, that is', in the face of a sudden flurry of people wanting to cut into our free speech rights.

As if anybody here is trying to stop you attacking religion. People are defending it, but that is something else entirely. Whereas when I see people talk about how atheists must cleanse their society of religion and irrationality I start to wonder who the the threat to freedom of expression actually comes from.

It's you who've missed the point. The point is that religion is one of many things that is manipulated to justify violent behaviour. Of these many things, it's an extremely junior partner in comparison to, say, the flag. And in the cases when it is used, it is a tool, rather than the cause. So I am defending religion from the accusation that it is the world's leading cause of violence, when it is not.

And the fact that religion is so easy to manipulate doesn't make it dangerous? I personally don't want the religious wiped out, just to make religion less of an important thing in today's world.

It's all in the way you look at it, in the end...

Well not really all in the way you look at it, because on one hand there's the underlying cause and on the other there's the things used to cover for that cause.

But anyway, yes I agree we would all like it to be less of an important thing.

I'm of the opinion that fear of hell is something that makes a whole hell of a lot of people who wouldn't otherwise behave, behave.

Remove that fear and who knows what would happen?

alot of those who thump the bible the hardest also is the hardest sinner. I don't think religion keeps people from doing much.

I would like to think that it isn't a threat of hell that keeps my neighbor from killing me in my sleep. Id like to give people a little more credit than that.

A lot of these "Bible Thumpers" are people who used to shoot heroin, have promiscuous sex, and live ridiculously immoral lifestyles before "getting saved" and feeling the need to prove something to the rest of the world.

By the way, for those of you who celebrate it (and even those of you who don't), Happy Easter. :)

Either you're the same old cynical curmudgeon that we know and love, or you've found Christ. Either way, post more, I miss your sarkasm and wit.

in an extremely late response to this, it's the cynical curmudgeon part. I'm willing to bet that at least 50% of religious people are held back from rampant murder due entirely to religious beliefs concerning hell.

pessimism: not just for In Flames fans anymore.

Ehhh, I wouldn't go as far as to say "50%", but I would agree that there's probably a sizable number of religious people like that. Of course, it also depends on what your actual religion is. Since not all religions believe in Heaven and Hell. And there are also people who believe in neither Heaven nor Hell, but belong to religions that typically do believe in them.
